Video killed the radio star, my friend...
Don't get me wrong...I am and always will be a radio geek to the core, but it's so dissapointing to see what has happened to the industry. And, locally it is an extreme example. Stations that are nothing but wannabe jukeboxes that play commercials occasionally, or the 'big chain' station, that if I scan the dial I can hear 2 others, kind of like a radio McDonalds that serves 'country' music. Speaking of McDonalds, you could actually make more money working there, than in radio. Here's proof: The station that advertised a 7-12 shift, M-F...2 hours live, the rest voicetracked...pay just about minimum wage. Gee, can I work in State College radio, please? Do you think they're gonna pay for 2 hours that your not at the mic? Doubtful...and what kind of talent do you get with that pay scale? A kid who will go work at Mcd's instead of becoming a broadcaster.
As a matter of fact, I'm amazed that stations haven't come up with a scheme to get you to pay them to work there, or for listening...oh, that's right...there's SirusXM for that.
I agree with you about the new delivery platforms on the way. It might level the playing field for all media, even better than AMs on FM translators! (See...Carey Simpson WAS onto something!)
I know there are others out there who know where I'm coming from...they just seem afraid to say it.
