Altoona's Mix 94.7

Hey John, do I count? Remember, I was the unknown voice heard 24 hours a day announcing songs on the WPRR music reels for awhile after John "Blair". LOL :D

You can list me as the nameless jock on WPRR in future listings. Just kidding.

Although it is surprising some people still tell me they remember me when I was on WVAM which was back in the mid 80s.

Good point AJ

The overall population of the State College market don't know who I am when I make an appearance here and there when I go home.

People didn't remember who Matt Haywood was either.

I will say that Calib was a good jock. How did he do on the Frog? Didn't they move Kelsey back to mornings?

There are some who will remember Rich Dennis from WVAM when he was halfway decent, some will remember him from WPRR where he was terrible in the morning by himself and needed Tommy to basically do the show for him.

More will remember him for his run-ins with the law than him on the air.

If you look at some of the jocks that came in and out of Altoona, Rich Dennis doesn't even show up in the top-20.

Roger Corey, Dick De'Andrea, Scott St. John, Tommy Edwards, Jim Hatch, Dave McCall, Darrell Ray, Stephanie Walsh, Kelsey, Jay Randall, Sherlock, Dave Shannon, McKay, Tom Riley, Steve Clark, Tony Booth, Stan Davis, Hilton, Danice Bell, Jim Price, Jerome Epple and Bob McCarty. Then you go to Casey O'Day, Bill Kurtis, Bill Piccarillo, and so many more have more on-air talent than Rich Dennis ever had. He had his success doing country before there was a Frog.

If I was building a station from the ground up, my choice to be the first person on the air would not be who is rumored in either place. Calib hasn't been on the air in Altoona since the mid-90s. People worry about the TSL being at 3 hours max, do you really think someone is going to remember a jock from around 10 years ago.

Altoona will never change. The Frog will be #1, as long as Roger and Dick are together WALY will be strong and Tommy and Bithell will do well on ROCKY.

There is my little discertation.

I think Ed Sherlock needs to come back to the Altoona market and set the market on it's ear. He had some good ideas and was probably ahead of his time in many ways. Ed was talking and dreaming FM while most broadcasters were still thinking in terms of AM only. That one fellow on here who has been a PD/MD/consultant/PHD/RFD who has pulled stations out of bankrupty and discovered a cure for cancer...and in general, literally saved the business, ought to get involved again and set the whole market on it's ear. What happened to the real radio guys like Jay Boring, Barney Hoople, the trucker who pulled all-nights at WTRN (Big Gene I believe), Farley Featherfoot, Harvey Knutson, and Chuck Bloom? What ever happened to the WRTA Winn-it Wagons? That's when radio was radio. What an idea for liners..."We're (call letters & frequency) and we're setting the market on it's ear".

Just made me smile. I remember the Win-It-Wagon! I also remember when WFBG had that big mobile studio they drug around for live broadcasts and when they did a remote, you knew they were there cause it was an "event" and not some guy hiding in the corner with a mic trying not to be noticed. here is another blast from Radio's past....whatever happened to WRTA's Rita the Robot? Bet thats sitting in some broom closet someplace gathering dust. They used to bring that thing to remotes and kids were amazed

100% agreeance with Ed's professionalism. Remember, he was major market for many years over here in Pittsburgh before buying his own stations in Altoona/Cresson. Always a good voice with great delivery. Now that he is at WSDE, I highly doubt he will be back.

As far as myself, I wouldn't even think about returning to Altoona or the radio business anywhere. It just isn't like the old days where you spun 45's and 33's.

Can't help on too many of the names mentioned, but to my knowledge Chuck Bloom hasn't been in radio since the VAM days and Big Gene might still be working overnight at TRN. Maybe Ted, John, or AJ can confirm.

WOW! How time flies.

Yeh, now that I think, I remember Ted mentioning Radio Rich overnight.

My bad.

Big Gene has been dead for years.

If I remeber correctly ,Chuck Bloom worked for Bill Henderson in the 80's, who owned WWML in Portage back then.

You have to know the whole story, which I plead the 5th on. It's NB's B .

Who would ever even think about leaving WSDE to return to Pennsylvania?

Fried Man... do you know Ed Sherlock personally?

He would be a fool to leave the Albany, NY market for this area. He's been there and done a lot. Radio in this area is quickly heading into the crapper, especially with Forever owning the DMA.

Ed won't jump into something without really thinking it through. A very methodical man. That's why he is successful and wealthier.

Know him personally? You gotta' be kidding. One of Ed's best ideas back in the early 80's was to eat at the Cresson Ridge Restaurant. They had great fish and a man that could make those kind of decisions under the intense pressure he was under at the time is the kind of man this business needs more of these days...whether it be Altoona or Albany.

How is Mix 94.7 evolving? Have they launched a local morning show yet? And how bout a web-site? Been seeing a lot of talk about Ed on here but no one is commenting much on the station iteslf. I hope that's not a reflection of the general public's interest (or lack thereof) of the station, as I think Altoona has needed an A/C outlet for some time.

I remember when Ed used to do editorials (and boy did he have some strong opinions), he referred to them "on the air" as Eddy-Torials. Another idea ahead of it's time.

Oh no doubt about it that Ed was way ahead of his time when he decided to invest in a little FM station to go head to head with the Big Boys on the AM band back when people though FM was a joke. I recall some of the super advertising back and forth between the Q when it was CHR and WFBG and man did they dig into each other. Good stuff!

Ed's ten minute remote breaks are also the stuff of legend. You could tune away at the beginning of the drop, listen to two songs on another station, and tune back to Q94 and catch the end of the drop.

And don't forget the time Ed was doing a remote at Zack's, didn't know his microphone was on and then later that night got his purple car stolen by an organized car theft ring from Pittsburgh who had heard one of his drops from Zack's and figured the fellow on the radio would be an easy target because he couldn't put the microphone down and run after them. Thank goodness for the alert senior citizen who got the license number of the car. After that snafu, Ed got a ride to and from remote broadcasts and left the big purple car back at the station.

While we're on the subject of Ed...What ever happened to Neil Hart ?

Neil was Ed's business partner and had went back to Florida many years ago, mid 90's? As far as I know, he is still down there.

Neil's on the west coast these days managing the "girl" group Heart. He's also involved in putting together a Buddy Holly revival but I'm not sure how good of idea this is. He found some guy from Santa Monica that could be Holly's twin but, in my opinion, can't carry a tune in a bucket.
