AM 1010 - I'm confused

OK, I was looking for the official NY Yankees Florida radio affiliate and I am told it is Sports Radio 1010? I Googled and found that it indeed points to QYK AM.
1. Will QYK change format?
2. Will the Yanks be on the air though it is a Country station?
3. Why, on the internet, do they come up as Sprtsradio 1010?

I agree, Take those stupid looking pin stripes, and go back to the snow...

Well, since you are still here, I guess I'll take a stab at those questions.

> > 1. Will QYK change format?

Yes. That station's format is "Change format radio" If you don't like what's on 1010, just wait a few months, and they will change.

In the past couple of years, they went from country to ESPN radio, then dropped the ESPN, and stayed sports, then went to "hot talk". Somewhere along the way, they changed calls to WBZZ "1010 The Buzz", then went back to WQYK-AM as "Classic Country". Just wait... it will change again soon. That's the only thing that's ever certain about 1010.

> > 2. Will the Yanks be on the air though it is a Country station?

Let's hope not. We are very generous, gracious, and patient to let them come to Tampa for Spring Training, but I guess everyone up there has to leave the tundra occasionally to thaw out. Since Tampa still doesn't have a baseball team (yeah, like the Rays actually constitute a team) the home team is and always was the Braves. If you don't consider the Braves to be the closest thing that Florida has to a home team, then either:
A.) You are a snowbird who needs directions back either I-75 or I-95 north,
B.) You are a kid who was born after the Marlins and Rays came around, which is forgivable, if you support either the Marlins or the Rays.
or
C.) Yankee Go Home!

See my answer to your first question.

It will be interesting to see if the Yankees deal gets renewed. In the past, Steinbrenner pushed his people to get a Tampa affiliate so he could hear the games while he is in Tampa. While the Yanks did not do a straight time buy, There was usually some advertising dollars for spring games and the Tampa Yankees that came with the rights.

The deal is bizarre because in order to get cleared in the Devil Rays market, each AL team had to sign an individual waiver to allow Yankee games from their stadiums to be broadcast into Tampa. Not all teams granted it. So 1010 would run all the games from the Bronx, plus about half the road games.

Through XM George can hear all the Yankee broadcasts of road games, but not home games. (XM runs the road team broadcast on their baseball channels).

So, I wonder if they will even bother trying to get cleared in Tampa again.

First let me respond back to New Yorkers go home...

If New Yorkers never came to Florida there would be no Florida as it is today
think about it.

Now back to radio...

I just came back from Tampa and watched the Yanks in Spring Training and I also have been there when the Yanks are in the playoffs.
I am very familiar with the Yankee radio situation. CBS radio owns the broadcast and it is never a problem for them to put the Yankees on their radio station as long as they can get clearance even in a city that has major league baseball like Tampa as they do most of the time except for example when Baltimore is playing the Yankees. Baltimore does not like the Yankees.
WQYK 1010 AM is of course a CBS station so I hope they will still put the Yanks on again down in Tampa. As you have noticed they always put any Westwood Radio events on 1010 am no matter what the format is. In case any body cares for my thoughts about what format 1010 am will change from it will be to "oldies" with Westwood radio & Yankee radio games.

Re: AM 1010 - You're confused

Here's the simple answers to your questions...

> > > > 1. Will QYK change format?

No, they are doing well this time.

> > > > 2. Will the Yanks be on the air though it is a Country station?

Yes, the Yanks will return to the 1010 airwaves.

> > > > 3. Why, on the internet, do they come up as Sprtsradio 1010?

Because of so many format changes.

Re: AM 1010 - You're confused

How do you know they are doing well?
The trend doesn't come out till the end of the week.
I do agree though that this is the best move they have made in the past 4 years!
Steinbrenner owns the YES Network. He could have the games beamed right into his head if he wanted to. Now XM has all the games anyway. I don't buy the fact that they wanted it on a Tampa station so HE can hear it. I think it may have to do with Yankee Headquaters being here AND the amount of transplant NYers here that everyone seems to hate.
I love to know how many of you guys bashing the Yankees for being on in Tampa...actually go to Devil Rays games?? I wanna see ticket stubs!!

May not be the reason now...but it was for two seasons in the 90s when Steinbrenner, through Bomber management, cut a deal with WZTM AM 820 to have some Yankee games air on the station..and several spring training games that weren't aired on WABC, were produced and called locally by the staff of 820.

Good luck with that. If it weren't for out of town fans ponying up to buy seats to watch their teams, average attendance would be about 3- 5,000 per game....kinda like the Bucs of the 90s..remember "Lambeau South" ?

Oh, but now that we can bring in our own food...and how 'bout the new paint on the seats!

Halla-friggin'-luia! Any GM will tell you those are the two biggest clinchers to making a baseball powerhouse.......

Re: AM 1010 - You're a joke.

Memo to 1010 AM and all condescending New York Yankee apologists (which is pretty much all of the electronic media here in this market, especially that no-name TV station and Bay News 9):

F.U.N.Y.Y.

Go Rays! They're our REAL home team, so if you see Rose Ferlita, tell her to take her pinstripes and stick them where the sun doesn't shine. And yes, Cowhead, I DO have my ticket for opening night.

You are the only one, dude. Just kidding. I go to about 10 D-Ray games per year. However, I am a Yankee through and through.

Nominee for best line of the week.

I think first and foremost it was a way to stick it in Naimoli's face.

Last and least. The Yankees were on Tampa radio before anyone outside of the bay area business community knew who Vince Namoli was. Besides, Steinbrenner and Namoli are friends; you can also thank George for influencing the rest of MLB to create the Rays, when much of the league wanted to keep the area for spring training only.

I know you're one of the better-informed posters on this board, so I won't go as far as to flat out argue the point... but that just doesn't add up. By all accounts, Naimoli was infuriated by the continued presence of the Yankee broadcasts, and had to practically beg other owners not to clear the games originating from their parks (and was only mildly successful at that). That's how George treats his friends? I mean really, this is unprecedented in pro sports to my knowledge, beaming the bulk of a team's regular season games into another major league team's home market. But I guess the rules don't apply to New Yorkers...<P ID="signature">______________
