AM 1030 Elk Grove Granted by FCC

1030 has been dark since 1988. I won't believe it until they are on the air. Is Royce still interested in returning to the Sacramento market? Especially he no longer owns KWOD? I wonder what format Clear Channel would put on 1030? Another Talk Format? or a Sports Format? What other format does CC have on the AM dial in other markets? Ethnic? I know they own Religious KRDU-1130. Could 1030 become "Brokered Religion" and give Salem a run for its money?

This thread makes me miss the short-lived KIOQ (10-Q) from the Summer of 1987 even more. That was a great station. That station was Jack/Bob/Ted (etc) before its time. I could remember hearing "Ball and Chain" by Janis Joplin/Big Brother and "Here You Come Again" by Dolly Parton in the same set. Their slogan was "Giving You a Piece of the Rock".......It was way ahead of its time. I believe KIOQ's "10-Q" format was Sacramento's shortest running format (excluding stunts). The format ran from late June 1987 through September 1987.

The only economically-viable format I can think of for the frequency nowadays would be the same type of Brokered Ethnic programming one hears on 1430 KJAY, or 1110/1690. Standards or 50s-70s Oldies would be nice, but I think those Demos are no longer desirable for advertisers.

I thought "10-Q" was only on the air for a couple months from June to August of 1987, then off the air for a month then Adult Standards KKSA went on the air in September?

How powerful is the new AM? Who owns it?

The CP shows a Directional Class B. Should put a good signal over Sacramento area.

Daytime: 50kw; 3 towers

Nighttime: 10kw; 4 towers

Transmitter site east of Galt.

I remember 10Q, a few friends worked there the few short months it was on the air. It was entertaining to be sure, but music on AM just sounds awful

The CP was granted to "KM Communications"...weren't they the same people who got a CP (or had an app) for 890/Citrus Heights?

My Swiss Cheese Memory is telling me that they had brokered ethnic programming in mind.

A local businessman named Kin Shaw Wong applied for the 890 frequency back in the early/mid 1980s. He applied for the call letters KPTO. His intent was to place Ethnic programming on the frequency. The only reason I know about the proposed programming is because a friend of mine bought a used car from Mr. Wong back in 1983, and Wong told him of his plans to run Asian and Ethnic programming.

After reviewing the FCC link at the top of this thread, KM Communications has three principal officers noted. All of them are from the North Chicago suburbs, and all have Korean surnames. Since Sacramento has a large Asian population, I wouldn't be surprised if the format for 1030 would be Brokered Ethnic programming. But KM and Kin Shaw Wong are separate entities.

Madmansam, you may have a better memory of the sign-off date of 10Q. I just remember that the station was off the air by Labor Day of 1987. You are correct about KKSA signing on the following month, though. It came back with a Big Band/Standards format. That lasted a year or so, until it signed off. On occasion, KKSA would sign on and broadcast Nebraska Cornhusker games during college football season, but sign off after the games were over. By 1990, Stolz was looking to put the 1030 frequency back on the air. I believe he was considering News/Talk. Back then, the AM dial would have easily accomodated a News/Talk format on 1030.

I'm not sure how I connected KM and the old KPTO/890 app, but I'm pretty sure it was well known at the time that KPTO had planned brokered Asian programming.

Wasn't the Nighttime of the old KHWY-KIOQ-KKSA 1kw to protect KTWO?

Transmitter site east of Galt, 50k directional. I wonder in what direction it is geared for? I am guessing it will cover all of Sacramento up to about Chico down south to about Merced easy and up into the foothills. ???

Daytime field strength plot is here:

I don't know about Chico, but I suspect it will hit Sac just fine during the day. Nighttime might be sketchy. I predict that anyone listening in Roseville will be very aware of the pattern switch.

Speaking of short lived formats/stations: Does anyone remember Power 105.5 ? It was House/ Dance music for a while. Not for long as I remember.

Yes, they weren't on as long but KIOQ-1030 was still on shorter than Power 105.5

Was this 1030 frequency once licensed to Folsom and ran for a few years? Or am I thinking of a different frequency (1050?)?

Also, was this frequency auctioned or bought?

Correct...1030 was a Folsom-based frequency. It began broadcasting on Friday, February 2, 1985 as KHWY. It ran a Country format and had the slogan "ride the country highway."

I don't know the specifics behind the sign-off. But it was economic. One of the owner-investors, whose last name (I believe) was Nicholson was taking money from the station and paying off his own personal debts, robbing the station of revenue and hastening its demise. I think he wound up in the pokey for his deeds, but I am not 100 percent certain.

I am assuming 1030's towers were probably sold to pay off creditors, and the land was also sold as well (unless they were leasing the land).

Got the sign on and the sign-off of KHWY on tape. Also have the Sign-On of 10Q with Tony Cox and the next morning with Gene Lane on tape. Tony signed the station on for about an hour the night before (eight to nine PM) the station officially signed-on with Gene Lane. Is that Nicoleson guy still in jail? He was stealing the money of the folks in limited partnerships he managed.

I belive that the 1k night time power was correct for "The All New 10-Q". I remember it was fighting it out with KTWO at night and that was in downtown Sac. I always thought that was part of the reason for the failure. The new operation with 10k a night should do better. Has there been a change of KTWO's pattern to allow this?
