AM 1140 Format Change?

On KXNT I have heard promos saying that starting Monday "Kids Radio" will be heard on AM 1140. They will play music from artists such as Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers. Hopefully they will play Demi Lovato, she is going to be the next Miley.

Yep!! iPods, cell phones with built-in MP3 player........and their portable AM transistor radios. Let's rock some Jonas Brothers like it's 1976!! ::)

The last time that frequency had any numbers was about 15 years ago when they were "cruisin oldies." They have no where to go but up for sure.

The new call letters will be KYDZ

All kids stations nationally are on AM even if kids (and their moms for that matter) never listen to AM.

Too bad the format isn't on FM. It's important to get the next generation in the routine of listening to the radio. But no FM station, even the fringe signals, want to "waste" their programming on a demo they can't sell, even if the PPM measures ages 6-11.

So with this change where will the Dodgers go, if anywhere on the LV radio dial?

Is this going to be a Disney station? like they have in SF?

maybe the Dodgers will go back to kdwn?

Cyrus at 16 is getting too long in the touth to appeal to the kidemo.

I’ve been listening to this station’s webstream, and I must say that I’m impressed. I’ve never heard a locally programmed Kids, er, uh, tween station before. Now, CBS, all you have to do is add some kid Jocks, and you’ll be fine. Oh, and no, I don’t mean that you should ask some 40-year-old to pretend that they’re a kid, I mean record and produce material voiced by kids themselves.

Now, I’d like to ask a question that may help in this discussion: Does Vegas have a “Radio Disney” station? If not, did Vegas ever have a “Radio Disney” station? The answer to that will help me analyze how this station will do in Vegas.

If CBS sticks with this format long enough, I predict a bright future. Of course they'll have to tweak the format as time goes on. However, if they do it well enough, this station should be #1 25-54 in the Fall 2043 Arbitron (when both current and future listeners age to within this demo)

HEY RADIOKID!

NO THERE'S NEVER BEEN A RADIO DISNEY STATION HERE. AT ONE POINT THEY STOPPED EXPANDING. PROBABLY A MONEY THING.

I'VE ALWAYS WONDERED IF RADIO DISNEY ACTUALLY HAD AN AUDIENCE AS THEY'RE ALL ON AM.

STILL A MYSTERY.

The closest Vegas had to Disney was its predecessor "Radio Ahhs" which had a short run on KKDD-1400 AM when it was owned by Regent Broadcasting April 26, 1995. Regent sold the station and the calls and format flipped to KSHP "K-Shop" in October of 1996. Disney forced Ahhs out of business and the format never ran in Vegas.

Thank you both for the info about “Radio Disney” in Vegas. It sounds like, for CBS, this is a new opretunity to do something different. With nothing left to lose, they went for it. It’s nice that it’s a locally programmed station, rather than a national network. Don’t expect CBS to do this everywhere.

BTW: I know this is off topic, but, Penrod, you mentioned, that KKDD became KSHP (“K-Shop?” after Regent sold it. What was the format? The infomercial channel? All commercials, all the time? No, really, I’m curious.

That's pretty impressive that K-SHOP has been around for well over a decade now. They still have the same format they started off with in 1996 "The Radio Shopping Show". radiokid, you can learn more about it at kshp.com

K-SHOP also runs syndicated sports programming and some PBP. I thought it was funny a few years ago when one of the Lotus sports stations ran sweepers attacking KSHP. The sweeper said "All sports, No shopping".

That's right, "the shopping channel" sure has longevity!

KKDD "Radio Ahhs" had very humble beginnings, I was the CE for the station when Regent flipped to the Satellite-delivered format. Lacking an automation system at the time I setup the station to run off two cart machines: One with the legal ID and another with a couple of 3-minute songs to cover their weekly closed-circuit feed. I still have the relay panel in my garage. Also, operating under an STA (Special Temporary Authority) we initially put out a whopping 15 watts!

The only kids in Vegas are either Mexican or Mormon background, so how do you appeal to that demo? (Get Donny Osmond to sing a duet with Piolin about the merits of storing beans for the future?) I don't think it will work. What happened to the sex station? in Central California? That was something different.

the Disney station in the SF area was part of KGO KSFO cluster, but they didn't cross promote much.

Newsperson responds:

Las Vegas does not and has never had a Radio Disney station.

I remember when they came to Sacramento and bragged how great it was to work for Disney. Some young men and women were happy to accept part time positions at just a couple of dollars over minimum wage. In fact I would have accepted the station manager position at just over 30K plus commission except they were being managed out of S.F. at the time.

Back in 2001-2002 I really thought that Radio Disney was a good mix in the broadcast community. Now I realize that they just want to take and will lie to your face anytime. In fact the CBS management are saints compared to Radio Disney management in Burbank.

So I'm excited to hear that CBS has decided to develop a kids format locally. My main concern in doing this format is not to be identified with Disney. And the second is to sell advertising.

Can you tell us how the station is doing now? Do they have any local advertisers? Do you see them out at remotes?

I will look for your replies and just saw their webb site, it looks good.

I think this format switch was GENIUS! THey are the only kid oriented station in Vegas and with the Disney Artists at there peak in popularity. (Jonas Brothers tickets selling out in a hour) I think if they market right, Mainly pushing the Streaming due to the stations kinda crappy signal I think this thing will take off. And its run by Cat Thomas the man who refuses to fail. ;D

besides concert tickets, video games and music downloads what can you sell to likds on radio without having the parents complain? training bras? happy meals?
acme treatments?

That would be a hilarious commercial by the way "Are you suddenly in need of support, get the newest Hannah Montana Training Bra!" Its so easy to market kids these days, especially since most of them are nothing like the kids of yester-year. Kids what they want when they want. Parents will do anything to get their kids to shut up. Market new video games, clothing lines..etc... Brilliant!!
