WIWA-AM 1160 has returned to the air, and it's not so good.
They have been carrying, via satellite, Alex Jones and his far-right "Infowars" programming. They're on 24/7; no legal ID's.

Maybe the owners are just doing one of those turn on the transmitter for a few days and run something just to keep the license current. Hopefully it will go away. Alex Jones is the biggest idiot to ever crack a microphone.

I think the bank/lender owns it. It will sell for about $10 more than the land value when the smoke clears.

They have a mainly north-south directional signal - not much going east and west. You were right in the sweetspot in SW Volusia County. I love the part about "as long as I could stand the programming"

I would hardly call SW Volusia a "sweet spot" in any sense... but that's a different discussion ::)

I can't see the upgrade for this station ever being completed. I'm involved with a very similar AM facility, and it's very cost prohibitive.

It is a directional sweet spot, not necessarily a broadcasting sweet spot.

Most AM upgrades are cost prohibitive at this point in the AM game.

In 1996, I was working for WOTS/Kissimmee. Since we only had 1kW days and flea-power at night (I could hear Mexico City and Cleveland in my headphones), we were looking for upgrade options. 1160 had been "found" in a search for open frequencies, but not yet allocated. We decided against pursuing it because the costs of construction & operation would likely exceed potential revenue. We also decided against increasing power on 1220 with a multi-tower directional array for the same reason.

This was 17 years ago. If it wasn't financially viable then, it sure isn't now.

While you were with WOTS, I'm curious what was the maximum potential power upgrade discovered for 1220?

If I remember correctly, it was 10kW daytime. But this required 5 towers and a new TX site located WSW of the current site. Main lobe would have been NE. Basically, right up I-4 into downtown Orlando and then on to SE Volusia Co. Deep null towards 1220/Sarasota and 1230/Lakeland. Nights would have remained at 1kW, due to 1220 being a Mexican clear. The nighttime SW null towards Mexico City would have allowed an upgrade from 110 watts ND.
