Sean-
WTPG is dead, always was dead, and will always be dead! If it was such a good station and format 103.9 would have picked it up when CC dumped it, but instead they went conservative too! Listen to your stream from Akron or whereever you get it from. Everyone knows (if they pay attention to elections) that there are even more democrats in NE ohio than here in Columbus, and that's why that station is still on the air, and WTPG is not. I think CC should dump what they have now and get Radio Disney on 1230. It's extremely well produced, has that Disney name that families love, and it's gotta do better than what 1230 is now!
1. The Akron station flipped to sports six months ago.
2. The progressive talkers that currently have more than one million listeners have been in the business much longer than Air America has existed. Ed Schultz had a big following in North Dakota long before he moved to the left. Lionel dominated morning drive in NYC. Thom Hartmann had a big following in the Northwest, while Randi Rhodes has ruled afternoon drive in West Palm Beach (following Rush). And Stephanie Miller has been on the air in some of the nation's biggest markets. She is #2 in LA in morning drive. And all five of them can be heard on stations playing the likes of Rush, Hannity, Beck, Savage, etc., in various parts of the country.
3. That said...the remainder of the Air America lineup didn't have the on-air experience of the aforementioned five. Al Franken may have gotten the listeners, but I don't miss him. I subscribe to the podcasts of Steph and Big Eddie, and I get Rachel Maddow for free (a regular on Tucker Carlson's show), but I don't miss the Air America hosts much even with the reincarnation. And with hosts like Bill Press, Mike Malloy and Leslie Marshall, progressive talk could be programmed without using Air America at all. By the way...Marc Maron filled in for Rachel earlier this week. I don't miss him, either.
4. Do I see progressive talk returning? Not as a format in an of itself. But if NABCO were smart, it would find a way to air Steph for the entertainment value and Big Eddie for his ability to draw conservatives, especially with guests like the father of conservatism, Richard Viguerie. At least it wouldn't have to rely so much on Fox Sports.
5. Of the array of formats on 1230 over the years, WTPG still had the best numbers in recent memory. The numbers of WYTS are half (if that much) of WTPG at its peak, and the progressive talk format tripled the listeners from the "real oldies" format.
6. I agree with you on the Radio Disney comment. I'm surprised no other station has considered it. Then again, Columbus will have two stations arriving from Marion and Zanesville very shortly.
Oh, and WTDA only airs six hours of conservative talk a day, half of it posing as comedy. And Dennis Miller has yet to get his million listeners.
