AM 1310 "The King"

I was listening to 1310 around noon today and they were playing Ed Shultz. Looks like they have launched a progressive talker in the ATL. I visited their website www.am1310theking.com and looks like Randi Rhodes and Thom Hartmann are also on there.

Looks like they finally started broadcasting online too which, I think might be where they would get most of their listeners since the am signal is rather weak. I can't go through my office parking deck without intermittent signal.

Plus its on like a 50 foot tower in the middle of a concrete parking lot at Avondale Marta Station.

On AM, tower height should be matched to frequency and should not really be a factor in signal strength. FM is a different story; antenna height is as important as wattage.

Interesting, truly did not know that, but why are some of the 50k's sticks so tall?
Low frequencies (WDUN 550, WSB 750, WSM 650 and WLW 700 on the big Blaw-Knoxes, WCNN 680)=big wavelengths.  The Blaw-Knoxes that WBT 1110 uses are a lot smaller than the ones used by WSM and WLW (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blaw-Knox_tower )

This is also why the antennas on cordless and cell phones have shrunk to the point of disappearing inside the case (insert iPhone 4 comment here)--the moves to higher frequencies.

You can match an FM antenna size to frequency a lot easier because the optimum size of the actual antenna is so small compared to the height of the tower.  But FM depends on line-of-sight and AM doesn't, so putting that small antenna up high on a tall tower helps coverage (or causes interference, if you're trying to squeeze a signal in).  This is also why FM sticks are often on mountains--versus AM sticks which are often in flood plains, due to the land being wetter, which helps ground conductivity (and the purchase price of the land).

They should be, but if I'm not completely wrong, the FCC database reads that the tower is 67.1 degrees; that would mean it is short even for 1310.

Station sounds very good. i saw what you guys wrote and had to hear it for myself and it was some crazy talk going on there around 11 am, as to what is going on in afghanistan (cannot repeat it here though). Not sure what kind of radios you guys have. There is absolutely no static downtown and I drove the signal all the way to mcdonough and it was fine. Yes, for such a puny tower, this signal is actually quite strong. Not my style of talk though but in all honesty I can see how anyone who does not like rush, hannity or beck would be quite happy and this thing may just actually do quite well. will see how long the king lasts. interesting times. libs on radio in atlanta. what in the heck is this world coming too. :).

Looks like they actually started broadcasting the stream now.

Interesting to hear a talk station come together with it's on-air content. For a few days, there was no news, just some weird, goofy music. They still do that but it's clearly because they don't have the ads yet.

yeah, looks like they added news, and have been playing jazz on the week-ends with no talk. interesting. talk/jazz combo. wonder if this will cause a problem for waok?

You would think "The King" would be like WGAC in Augusta. Like you said, "The King" is doing talk during the week and jazz on the weekends. What's different between "The King" and WGAC is while "The King" is doing during the week talk and weekend jazz, WGAC, on the other hand airs News/Talk radio 7 days a week on the AM/FM dial, but streams local programming such as morning drive, afternoon drive, and Saturday morning programming. When WGAC isn't streaming local programming, they're streaming smooth jazz thus they can't stream syndicated programming, commercial breaks, and newscasts. More details are at http://www.wgac.com/.

I would like to see the King go the route of 880 the revolution up in Asheville but incorporate local talk/community information into their weekend lineup.

The old WJFK in Washington did this for years in the 90's.

Probably beats the pants off of brokered programming...especially since the bigger stations are already scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to that. Some of the carp that people will pay to have aired...

i have been listening to this lady they have on at 3pm "Randi Rhodes". if you have not heard her, you should give her a listen. i had never heard of her before but honestly, she is pretty darn good. she is tough and brings out the whoop a#s on these callers. funny as heck too. i think if people knew about her being on, hannity would not stand a chance. anyone else heard her yet?

Randi competed with Sean for a year and a half. NO results. Not to mention, she's difficult to work with...
