AM 1340 in Palm Springs sold, now progressive talk

From All Access:

Adult Standards KWXY-A-F/PALM SPRINGS splits the simulcast with the takeover of the AM side by new owners RR BROADCASTING. The AM station is going Talk on AUGUST 7 as "PROGRESSIVE TALK AM 1340, KPTR," using JONES' STEPHANIE MILLER and ED SCHULTZ, FOX' ALAN COLMES, and AIR AMERICA RADIO's AL FRANKEN and RANDI RHODES. The FM continues with the Standards format.

RR Broadcasting owns a few other stations in town, including the area's two talk stations, 920 and 1450. Now they have a left-leaning counterpart to the two.

Another Left winger........Kewl!!

I wonder if they will do well??!!

I don't think I have seen any location with worse ground conductivity than the Coachella Valley... even worse than Long Island. Morris uses 970 in Coachella and 1140 in PS to cover the valley... two good frequencies and signals, but they hardly cover with two.

1340 barely makes it to Palm Desert... at Indan Wells, Bermuda Dunes, La Quinta, Indio, 1000 Palms, etc. the signal is pretty ratty. At nigh, nothing.

I didn't think Long Island was all that bad. Lots of salt water, especially on the south side. Of course, the water made one of the biggest stations on eastern Long Island, WICC out of Bridgeport :)

Unfortunately, nobody lives in the salt water. :(

The "island" itself is a huge sandbar. It has very low conductivity. Once the water-borne signals hit land, they die.

The people at KWXY are very old and slow, so it is no surprise 1340 is still listed on the 98.5 web site. However, from it's launch date KPTR 1340 is on the R.R radio corporation web site along with co-owned KDES,KPSI-AM and FM, and KGAM.

Old, slow, and $3.6M richer... Talk about some serious speculation! The Coachella Valley is home to *8* AM stations (920, 970, 1010, 1140, 1270, 1340, 1400 and 1450), none of which provide particularly good daytime coverage to the entire (albeit small) market, and nighttime coverage is a joke. Toss in the numbers lost to KFI 640 (comes in pretty well on the west end), and all 8 signals are struggling to even push a 7-share... Oddly enough, in a market where the two top stations are spanish language FMs with a combined 29-share, the AM dial only has 1 spanish station (1-kW on 1400 out of Indio).

The Indio Spanish station is religious, about the only thing that can make money for a Spanish AM. In LA, there are about 30 Spanish shares... less than 2 shares for all the Spanish AMs combined, and most of that is KLTX, the religious station. Hispanics will not listen to AM if there is an FM alternative.

What, this makes 2 or 3 left-wing, blame-America stations nation-wide?

Woohoo...big demand for THEM I can see. Really now, there are more people watching grass grow than listening to left-wing hate radio...

1340 KPTR is a no show in it's first book. Meantime, Morris' KNWT 1270 dropping the mix of brokered talk, Dr. Laura, and Fox sports at night to go to ESPN Deportes spanish sports.

1340 is an absolute joke. I was driving through from AZ and couldn't hear Stephanie Miller at all, and my car radio typically picks up stations better than most.

What does RR want with this thing? Particularly when KPSI is no longer the top news/talker, displaced by a simulcast that is only necessary at night (and even then, 970 seems like it would only be needed for at-home listeners, because it comes in fine in the car, even in Henderson, where KNUU and KSFN are each 15 or 20 miles away!). Put it on KGAM and make 1340 the dog conservatalkers with Savage and whomever else... maybe pick Dr. Laura up, although I presume, from the 12+ number KFI gets, that KESQ had the same problem KOGO did with her... that is, if anyone could hear 1270, either.

BTW, Dr. Laura isn't going away... she's replacing the dreadful Brian and the Judge on 970/1140, who replaced Glenn Beck when he moved up to a live clear in AMD. Good move by Morris, who also added Mark Levin.
