AM 1580

What is wrong with the signal? It is apparently running a lot less power than usual. I noticed this over the past couple of days.

Listen at local sunset & see if their signal changes. I don't know how they set their remote control up, but I set mine to restore an AM station's transmitter to night power if the remote control loses it's time/date setting. If their signal strength isn't changing from day to night, they may be stuck on night power. I have seen situations where something like this has happened & only after a few listeners called in was it determined that the 4 digit daytime power was actually double digit night power. If it's a mom & pop owner, it's possible. If it's CC or Cumulus or another large group owner, it would seem unlikely.

I live in SW Lexington and here's what I have noticed. First off, 1580 is a CC station. If anything, their night signal (44 watts, I believe) seems a bit more anemic than usual in the last week, but daytime seems "normal". Maybe someone, a bit farther away or in one of their pattern "weak spots", could add more to this. I am pretty much in their primary lobe.

They seem to be stuck on night power as the signal never changes. I listened to them well past Somerset, KY with no problems at all two weeks ago and now they barely make it here to Danville so something has changed. The last time they were like this a tractor had taken out two of their three towers and they had to reduce to a thousand watts non-directional.

Would you care to share how you do this? I have Sine Systems at all my sites (except one) and it has lost it's time/date info and the station would be stuck in one mode until I thought to check it.

Sure...if it loses it's memory, there's been a power outage. Programming line 1008 is "Power Up Action Sequence". Select an Action Sequence...for example 5. Go to programming line 0788 and enter the relay command(s) for night mode. Test it during the day by unplugging the Sine for a few seconds & plugging it back in. 10 seconds later, you should be on night power/pattern. Not only does this assure legal operation, it also restores the transmitter after the power outage. Let me know if you have trouble doing this...I've done it to 4 AM's using the Sine Systems & it's never failed to do what I programmed it to. I wish everything in life was as reliable as a Sine Systems RFC-1/B...

Ah, I got 'cha. I'm familier with that command. I have never thought about using it in that way. I use outboard relays on all my directional AM's so that one command channel changes power and pattern. I can use that or simply use the power channel to bring them up a night power regardless of pattern.
