AM 1700 All Hit Radio - Air Algonquin - Ottawa

New to me, though perhaps they've been up and running since September???

I'm aware of Algonquin College's FM operation, CKDJ 107.9, but today I caught something new on the AM side of things. Going by the tags, 'AM 1700' 'All Hit Radio' and 'AIR Radio 1700', etc, it runs a -wait for it- CHR format, on 1700 kHz. I don't know how far beyond Algonquin College it can be heard, but it's something to be on the look out for.

Got to be a pirate as there is no listing for a station anywhere in the Ottawa region on 1700 in the Industry Canada database.

No sir, not a pirate. Identifies itself with Algonquin College, newscast at 1:30 PM (local), appears totally legit...has it's own website, with links to CKDJ and Algonquin's Radio Broadcasting program.

My first thought when I found out about this last week was that it could be closed circuit...but there's not much in the way of residences for Algonquin. Maybe it's only a few watts. Some day I'll have to take a bus to Algonquin with the g8 and see what happens.

It can't be legit, otherwise it would appear on the I/C database with a set of call letters. The exception would be if the station's power is 100 MW's or under (which means you might hear the signal a block away).

When you guys investigate this situation let us know. I'm curious.

Is it possibly a low power non licensed station, not sure what the rules are on those in Canada. I haven't heard anything unusual on 1700 at night here, but will keep a look out. 1700 is a relatively clear channel even something with several watts would probably make it here.

& How much does it cost to run? Why would anyone go through all the trouble of spending all that money for the upkeep of an AM station if they couldn't do it legally?
Or, if it is legal, why bother for such a short distance? Is it worth it?

Algonquin college has a broadcasting programme where they teach people to be radio broadcasters and all the other technical aspects. They've operated ckdj 107.9 for years, and it could be that "am 1700" is a way to get more students through the programme. I still haven't been able to find time to bus over there to see if there really is any on air signal or not.

Caught their (daylight) signal yesterday, just barely, from the corner of Woodroffe and Hunt Club. I don't know where the transmitter is located, but if it's in the studio located in Algonquin College's 'N' Building ('School of Media and Design'), then that's a range of just over 2.25 km. We're not talking earth shattering power here, folks!

Their online offering is atrocious with all the cracks and hisses. If you're gonna go to the expense of broadcasting music @ 128kbps, at least do it right.

mimo, if your looking to snag the signal, keep in mind the school year is wrapping up and I suspect they'll shut 'er down over the summer, as they do with CKDJ (at which time , Syracuse's WWHT and Burlington VT's WVPS can often be heard in Ottawa).

I've been picking up the signal in the parking lot of the T&T (Riverside and Hunt Club). According to Daft-Logic, that's a snag of 5.3 KMs (3.3 miles). That's roughly the same as snagging the airport TIS (listed as being 99 watts) at the college, yet -as Dan pointed out- it's not on any data bases. Curious!
