AM 670 will be Classic Rock

Not only have they tightened up their music, they seemed to have moved in an AC direction. Here are some of the songs I heard them play today.

I loved the Sunday's song, but the rest of this can be heard elsewhere. This is like a mix of FRESH (and especially the old 80s and more STAR), SUNNY, "the new" KKLZ, and JACK.

Normally I'm all for playing the hits, but these songs are saturated. Why listen to AM (or a weak FM signal in Phoenix) when you can always hear these songs on citygrade FM stations?

I'd rather hear you co-mike with John Michaels. I'll bet his off-the-wall humor would have you huffing your Cheerios all over the console in no time! ;D ;D
 
I just started listening to the Q online 2 weeks ago and just now found this site. I tried to email a request a few times using the email address on the station website but it gets rejected. Has anyone else been able to email requests?

I wouldn't really know, but are these all current Las Vegas stations right now? I wouldn't mind a station that plays the best of a couple of stations in the market, but if it's close enough to be the SAME, I do agree people would probably choose FM over AM.

KMZQ plays songs that could be heard on either KOOL, KPKX, KSLX, and KESZ here in Phoenix. It's the fact that I can hear good stuff from all four on one station, plus the on-air talent, Bill, that keeps me coming back. And the playlist is more better than ever.

Have you tried both emails, for 99.3 and 670? I haven't sent an email, but I believe I heard somebody did it a couple of months ago, and it worked.

By the way, welcome to the board! It's nice you took the time to search about "the Q" to find this place.
 
I love how you're giving them kudos for narrowing a playlist to sound more like other stations in the market with a superior signal. Happens to all the good stations, sadly.

Narrowing the playlist from what it sort of was, yes, but making the playlist narrow? No. I'm not saying that at all.

There were too many songs that didn't go well with the rest of the playlist, plus, many of those songs went nowhere on the charts anyways. Tell me how a majority of listeners wouldn't turn the station when they hear The Specials, Run DMC, maybe even Mariah Carey, when they're wanting to hear "the greatest rock of the 70s and 80s"?

I don't think the playlist has to be narrow at all. It can be wider with plenty of great rock you don't hear often on FM; songs that wouldn't necessarily meet some programmers' criteria, but those that didn't necessarily go nowhere on the charts. I enjoy the "surprise" factor of the Q. That is, until it's something way out there...

And to clarify, I did ask above if the stations Jay listed are current Vegas stations. For all I know, perhaps they were popular stations from several years ago, which would be interesting to do the "best of" each, plus come out officially in the market with great promotions, imaging, etc. They're already off to the best start as far as talent goes, by having Bill Gardner. I didn't mean to make it sound like I think they should sound just like any current FM Vegas station.
 
Personally, I'm fine with hearing the Specials and Run DMC on the same station. I would love to see a younger more alternative styled Jack FM that recognizes that new indie, classic alternative and even the occasional hiphop or pop track would be fun. And a lot of people I know have a similar mix of music on their IPods or internet custom radio playlists. I respect that as a classic hits listener that may not be what you want out of the Q, but I was digging some of the deep cuts they played and wish there was a place on the dial for it. Especially in a market like Vegas where the club scene and music scene shows there's plenty of people who like music with an edge. A lot of trendy, in the know people with disposable income come to Vegas and I think a smart radio station could break the rules and capitalize on that.

As a DJ myself at different functions, I'm playing to a crowd that digs the Specials, Public Enemy, Run DMC, Depeche Mode, The Cure, MGMT and Death Cab for Cutie. And as a radio professional, I believe that somewhere, a smart group will take a chance on a next generation variety station that plays to educated people with taste and win with it. The Q had glimpses of that ideal that I really, really enjoyed. Kudos to them either way for giving it a try.
 
I listened last night starting at 11PM EST and, for the first 20 minutes, it was non-stop classic alternative. From that point on, they were still mainstream classic rock. R&B would be OK but in small doses (perhaps as a feature, like a "Soul Patrol").
 
Anybody know a phone number for them that works after 6PM?
It's the third night in a row they're on day power/pattern after sunset.
Then need to put 670 on NIGHT power & pattern before the shit hits the fan.
 
I just returned from a week-long sojurn through most of Nevada, and
discovered KMZQ - what a refreshing change of pace, especially on AM!

Being that I and my friend from Reno who joined me for the trip are 47,
and both former radio deejays, we found the playlist very satisfying,
generally speaking, although we didn't get a chance to hear much of
Bill in the morning...

What I found interesting is that KMZQ simulcasts an FM from Arizona, but it's
the AM that gets the 'priority'...

And the KMZQ signal roars! Picked it up in Tonopah in my '03 Honda, and almost
to Hawthorne, in the mid-morning hours...

Alas, we found no phone number for KMZQ in the latest Las Vegas "Yellow Book"
telephone directory, let alone a physical address, when we visited Vegas.
Anyone there know of either?

Great signal but nobody is going to listen to it. The generation who grew up in the 80s doesn't listen to music on AM and never will. They should go 50s/60s oldies. With such a powerful signal they could attract a following, even take away some of the upper end from KKLZ.
 
does anyone really care that much. This post has been going on for a year now! The station has no ratings and never will... who cares? it's a joke!
 
Don't underestimate the Q. Sure, it's on AM but it's got a strong signal, good music, and with everything retro "in" now, who knows? With effective marketing, more personalities to connect to the listener, and a street presence, I've no doubt you'll see numbers. Problem is, right now they're kind of like the shy kid at the party who just stands in the corner. The need to bust out and let people know who they are and what they're doing. I've not heard a commercial on the station since I found it a month or so ago, do they have a sales team? I would think Bill Gardener would be an easy sell.
 
For once I agree with Jay F. The problem isn't publicizing the station, it is owned by Kemp, which also does outdoor advertising and has several billboards dedicated to the Q. Bill Gardner is a great jock, but a terrible fit with the music they're playing. To hear him introduce acts like Flock of Seagulls and New Order makes me cringe. They should flip to all-out 50s and 60s oldies. He would be more in his element and more people would take notice.
 
The would at least show in the ratings if they went 50s, 60s oldies. Not sure how much money it would make. CBS didn't seem to have any ads on 1140 with the 50s, 60s format, but it had higher ratings than anything else they've done on 1140.

Time-brokered talk and preachers would probably be the most profitable for 670.
