AM 820 Ends The Fed

820 has a very good daytime signal. Something different on the AM band. I haven't heard this format yet, and I'll be checking it out later today.

I will do the same.

It's just as well that "Federal News Radio" bit the dust out there. With that said, as much as I feel that AM stations, particularly smaller operations should innovate, I'm not so sure that this is the way that 820 should've gone. IMO while en eclectic format might be good for a major metropolitan area, I think that in a medium or smaller market it would've been better to go with something a bit more mainstream. Standards might've been an option. Another, probably more viable option would've been a combination of classic country and bluegrass.

@Erwin: From what I read on the DCRTV Mailbag page, no stream exists...

@Klutch: The "Federal News Radio" format continues on AM 1500; you're probably thinking of the now-defunct "Gov Biz" format on WNEW-AM (now WJFK-AM).

I AM aware that 1500 will continue to be Federal News Radio. And no! I was referring to 820, NOT 1580. I didn't see the need for putting that format on the air in Frederick in the first place; hence my initial remarks.

Now, I had a chance to listen to the station while I was out and about today. Interesting listen, but again, I'm not so sure Frederick is the place for it.

Per the classic country-bluegrass suggestion - 820 was a mainstream country station for many years before the WTOP simulcast - now there are many country FMs in the region. However, WAMU's 'Bluegrass Country' now operates translators in Frederick & Hagerstown broadcasting perhaps the best bluegrass/classic country format anywhere - all the expertise of legendary Washington DC area bluegrass-country personalities with the backing of WAMU - so while the 820 signal would be stronger, starting up an AM country-bluegrass station to compete with WAMU would be an uphill battle. A more traditional classic country satellite feed might work better, like WKDW down I-81 in Staunton.

From what I read, 820 is still running sporting events and those dreaded infomercials on the weekend, so the format probably airs for the most part Monday through Friday.

I had 820 on most of Saturday afternoon and The Gamut was on. I guess a easy way to tell is to look at Federal News Radio's schedule and anything non-sports non-informercials is The Gamut on 820.
