AM 850- What are you doing Curtis?!

The historic WPTF site is in more of an industrial section of east Cary. Let's hope its value doesn't outpace the radio properties anytime soon, as it will soon be home to three of the five AM signals licensed to Raleigh (570 WQDR is diplexed there, too) as well as WKIX-FM 102.9 and 850's 104.7 translator, W284CP.

Looks like the decommissioning of WKIX 850's five-tower array and the move to the WPTF site is underway. AM 850 has been off-air for a week now and a message on their website (and running on-air at 104.7 and 94.7 HD-2) notes "extensive maintenance and technical work" interrupting their signal at 850 over the next several weeks. Rode by the site tonight and no aviation beacons or sidelamps are operational and some equipment from Greensboro-based demolition firm D.H. Griffin is parked outside the transmitter building.

We used to be able to hear WPTF at night clearly in Charlotte but I haven't been able to pick them up the last couple of years.

I think I am correct I heard it at night in or around Lake Junaluska in the mountains. That's just a few miels east of WRGC Sylva, which has moved from 680 to 540.

As I recall, WPTF can be heard during the day around Charlotte. Maybe not clearly.

I still remember the caller who said he was having trouble with the signal in north Raleigh, to which the host replied they pick us up really well in Cuba.

It appears the problem I have is WPTF is getting clobbered by WCNN Raleigh which runs ESPN Sports Radio. They run 50KW day but only 10 KW night where WPTF is full time 50KW.

I worked at WKIX in the 70s. The transmitter site was the original site for
WNAO (owned by the News and Observer) with the studios in what was the transmitter building for WNAO AM/FM/TV. Offices, shop and a spare production room were in trailers. It was a great place to work with talent like John Tesh and Rick Dees among others. Sad to see its signal down graded.

Make 104.7 an LPFM then. I prefer the sound of AM better than FM. When listened to on a suitable vintage Vacuum Tube receiver, the sound quality outperforms FM.
One does not make an AM station an LPFM, which is a non-commercial service operated bynon=profit entities. A translator may or may not be available.

I have a hard time picturing industry in Cary, as every time I read about the place it's been taken over by yuppies from up north.
I guess as industrial as Cary gets LOL. There's a petroleum facility nearby, several warehouse steuctures, and the North Carolina Railroad runs in front of the facility.

Yesterday evening, around 5:30, I noticed WKIX was back on the air at 850. They must still be making adjustments, as they were off again as of this morning.
