Howevere, their must be a good amount of ad money to be spent in the market. JPA always sounds loaded with local advertisers. If an investor had deep, really deep pockets and could higher a few good sales reps 1110 could make some money, but it would be a long long painful journey...maybe a conservative talker with the likes of Neil Bortz, Clarke Howard Mike Gallagher etc.

Didn't they try that already when Brodak and Loeper owned it? Right around 1990?

I know Loeper drops in on this board from time to time...John, what all were you doing on WKEG after you bought it from Ferguson?

Jim...what makes the difference more than anything is a hands-on operator willing to wear the different hats...including the ones in the sales office. That's where the money needs to be thrown...not so much in the on-air studio (other than necessary equipment repairs).

Ken, when we bought the station our original plan was to run CNN headline news (all news , all day) but we could not get clearence from the guy who runs KQV. They ran it overnight and he would not allow us to run it during the day. we ended up signing with "the American talk network". It was not a good move. Tried to get Rush but at the time WTAE was carring him on a delay over the weekends and would not clear us to run him live during the week. that pretty much doomed us. I also made a hudge blunder by keeping the WKEG calls. It was not until we starting operating the station that I realized just how tarnished those calls had become in the business community in washington, pa. the previous operators must have screwed every single business that ever advertised with them. As for Ferguson, If there was ever a bigger jerk to own a radio station anyplace I would not like to meet that person. about those tubes in the transmitter. we replaced all four of them in 1991. that is no doubt the last time they were replaced. Looking back, getting involved with that station was the dumbest thing I have done in my entire life.

Sounds like a Great Plan, Sorry it did not work out for you. If I may be so Bold, Did you ask KQV for a Deal like WZUM and KQV had in 1969/1970 when WIXZ signed on? [When WZUM signed off they said tune Now to1410 KQV] Was WKEG still Using Studio's in the Trailer? Was The Transmitter New when WKEG signed on ,or was it Used? Did you Think about Bying a New Transmitter instead of replacing the Tubes? ie Operating cost, Utilities ect. Thank You.

Yeah, if he'd thought of that I'm sure everything would have been different.

The studios moved into town above a furniture store when Nascone still owned the station, probably around 1983-84. The logo is still on the outside of the building (at least it was a year or so ago), right down the street from the current studios.

Phill, I actually offered Mr Dickie (manager of KQV) that we would cross plug his station twice per hour all day long (for CNN NEWS at night tune to 1410) he wsn't interested. his attitude kind of reflected his name as I recall. as for the transmitter at WKEG , we didn't have the funding at the time for a new Xmitter. My engineer (Allen Fox) did a fantastic job cleaning up the Xmitter site and getting that old girl up to speed for us. BTW..he did an even greater job at WANB when I was GM there. Our transmitter site was always spotless and the equipment was very well maintained. as for the entire WKEG experience...it was a very bad decision on my part to even get involved with that station in the first place.

John, I'm sorry that experience didn't work out for you. Terrible how that happened.

One thing about that station now is that it can't get even PSRA/PSSA authorization. The FCC determined in 2007 that it would cause 'destructive interference' with WBT. If it had at least that, they'd be able to keep the sign-on/sign-off times consistent to the point where they had at least AM drive time to offer advertisers.

I wonder if they could move to another channel. I would really hate to see this station die. It had so much character back in the day, and it still does. And with the technology available now, it could be competitive if owned by someone with the know-how in the engineering department. Someone get Myron Jones on the phone!

I just tried to receive KZV in the parking lot of our studios. Even when they were operating with only about 250 watts they were listenable. Now I can barely hear it. Perhaps it may be another station further away. Does anyone know if they are still on?

I heard them this morning when I was driving down route 7 from Steubenville to Wheeling. Signal seemed solid, audio sounded good. Good mix of classic country music, sad that the station can't get traction!

The last time I spoke with her she said she would sell. The problem is finding someone with enough cash to buy it. No bank will lend one dime to purchase a station like that.

1250 and hypwr need to talk....

She indicated that she would take less than that. However, she did want to hang on to the real property, and would lease the tower site to the buyer. You know, we all love radio, but are any of us willing to work that hard to bring a station such as this back to life? And, would anyone besides Dean's Water be willing to buy any spots?

If someone can come up with even one forth of her asking price in cash she needs to take that money and run. The station is worth less every year. Soon the land the tower sits on will be all the station is worth. Maybe she should be talking to Range Resources. :)
