AM 940

Now that Canada does not have a Station on 940 AM, Is their a chance Greenville and Charloi 940 can have Night Service?
I noted in the DX News that WGRP was picked up on 1/31/10 @ 0031 hours in Midland MI. not bad for for 2 watts. heem

my understanding is that the Canadians hold priority on that freq. by treaty and will not be giving it up,
whether a station is using it or not

Live And Local, Us Old Folks still listen to AM Stations, In Western Pa. "Old is Gold" Nursing Homes, Home Care Companies, Buick Dealers,Fair Priced Restrants,Rehab Hospitals. Advertise on the Frankie Day Show. We Love our Oldies and Polka's. Listen to 620 on the weekends. Tune your AM radio up and down the Dial you will find Ethnic show's 620,680,730,770,810,830,910,1050,1110,1160,1200,1230,1280,1460,1570 etc. all local AM Stations

You are correct.

I was going to suggest to Phil Z that I purchase a 50,000 watt Elcor short-wave transmitter and a log periodic antenna. Then we'll lease some land in Washington County and aim the signal to Siberia, with a large foot print on the Western USA and Canada.

We'll sell block programming for $100.00 per hour and operate 20 hours per day. Phil and I will each work 5 ten hour days and hire college students to play the programs on the weekend. We will gross around 700 K per year. We will each take 150 K per year. The first year's profits will be used to purchase a 100 KW xmtr. so we can charge a higher rate. The 50KW unit will then be aimed toward Latin America with a foot print over the Southern USA.

However, the latest "Radio World" arrived today and had a lead article about the coming death of short-wave broadcasting.

Oh well.

I hear Rhythmic AC is very hot in Siberia these days...

You jest. However, if you did program something like that you probably would have quite a few listeners. The problem is, how would you sell it. Have sales reps in Siberia? That's why most US short-wave stations air block programs....usually to the far-right. Even though they are required, by law, to target foreigh countries, they still have alot of signal in the US.

When I lived in SE Asia, the most popular program was VOA's "Music USA" with Willis Conover. When he visited the Iron Curtain Countries thousands came out to see him.

That's what CKLW did back in the day. Have a Detroit-based sales office while the rest of the operation was across the
border in Canada (at least until the Canadian Govt. put a stop to that)

I Currently work five 12 hour days, with Every other week end off, and don"t make close to that Amount. I also have an Option for Property in Greene County. When can I Start.

They would probably be dumb enough to do that.

By the way, speaking of VOA. I visited their One Million Watt transmitter on Luzon. It was quite impressive.
They had 4 towers beaming into China on 1120KHz. (Back then it was 1120KC.) This was the first megawatt xmtr. built by Continental. Since then they have reduced the size.

I toured VOA Studio's in 1992, State of the Art. They have people Monitoring the TV News Networks and will not Broadcast Events Unless it's Reported on those Networks. With Programs going out to Each Country From one central location.

I actualy got an audition at VOA in 1981...it was a killer. unbelieveably hard with poetry to read, foreign names to pronounce, they had an auditon script that was at least 6 pages long......needless to say, I did not get the job. I suspect the people who listened to my audition may still be laughing. the folks who announce for VOA are complete pros in everyway.

Charleroi's AM 940 already has a license to operate at five watts at night. Not impressive, mind you, but it's still nighttime power. You can at least keep your sign-on/sign-off hours consistent, if nothing else.

I had my own ideas for that station. But Keymarket, for whatever reason, has no desire to give up that, AM 1340, or AM 1130. There's plenty of businesses in that corridor of the market to make a go of it if you air enough local programming. If you're gonna program it to your own musical tastes, forget it.
