AM Antennas

Mike, CW, or anyone, I have a question, I want to put up a good AM antenna for my place out at Lavaca county, I didnt want to spend to much money on one, or if I could make one. I use to have it to where I hooked onto the ground part of my wire going out to the antenna on over to the pole, it worked great. But after I had the lightling strike a few months back, here in Austin that fried all of my equipment, I decided to start unhooking everything when I leave, and when there is a storm in the area. What would be the best, easest way to make a antenna? I almost thought about running a long wire all over the acttic, would that work? I just want to be able to pick up 550, 590, 610, 650, 740 and 1200, if possible 760 for another sports channel. I have a ok antenna here near Austin, it was from a boombox I baught from a yard sale, it picks up Austin am pretty decent. Any help would be great.
Thanks in advance.

Google (oops, gotta watch out for the trademark sharks...) Enter into a search engine of your choice the words "Loop Antenna" +AM. With you trying to separate the semi-local signals from the "soup", you're a good candidate for a loop antenna's ability to null signals, versus needing massive amounts of gain.

Pick a design and wind-away. Stressing over fancy tuned/amplified circuitry at the bottom is all well and good, but look for some homebrew designs that just use a tuning cap out of an old radio.

Or, if you want to burn some bucks but yet be the envy of DX'ers, grab the McKay Dymek DA-5 active loop that's on ebay right now.

Have fun.

Thanks to all for the info, I'll give it a shot!!

Here is a question, I had a old walkman that doesnt work any more, I riped it apart, I took out I gues it was the am antenna, it had a small wire looped a bunch of times, I hooked it onto my radio, it didnt work like it did in my walkman. What am I doing wrong? I dont really understand the loops and stuff.
Thanks
