AM audio in the Triangle

I dont know who is doing AM audio set up in the BPT area, but last time I listened to some of the AMs in the area, I was SHOCKED....990 AM owned by Rev Martin (who also owns an AM licensed to Baytown and 1140 in Conroe) SUCKS!!! It maybe is running 10% modulation...and driving south of Beaumont, 980 was clearly audible over 990s sidebands...the carrier of 990 barely makes it to the south side of the city as well...then we have Cumulus; 1450 and 1510...both SUCK!!! I worked at 1450 as KAYC in the 70s...and the station could be heard in Port Arthur at night...NOW you can barely hear the signal in Bmt!!! and 1510 is just as bad....1600 KOGT sounds better than either one (and thats not saying much!)...DAMN what is wrong with the Triangle AMs??? KLVI still sounds ok.....KDEI is not bad but not great..with its religious audio, it is usually softer than most....KOLE and KRCM sound like dog meat at times...distorted, heavily clipped like someone has the processor on MAX (or beyond...) but then 92.5 FM (KCOL owned by Cheap Channel) sounds just as bad....listening to some music on it while in town, I could heard MAX clipping and distortion on the vocals....geesh!!! It sounds like an AM!!

Hey CW, please do me a favor...the next time you are over that way (BPT), check out the audio on 99.9 FM and tell me what you think needs to be tweaked, if anything. Is it competitive sounding (technically)?I try to help the owner out by tweaking the audio, and on the radio in my car...it sounds great. BUT...that is just one radio and one set of ears.I appreciate your (and anyone else's) input!!!

Shine all nine sounds much better than many of the Beaumont FM stations, especially CC's offerings. KCOL sounds like listening to AM music in the 1960s, only its now broadcast on FM. Now that's taking people back into their memories!

I agree.....I know Bill Buchanan's station (have done some minor repair on his Nautel transmitter once) and know the audio chain, etc....I agree with Stan...for a small market station, it sounds better than most "bigger market" signals I have heard...Personally I like a little more high end..but thats me...(I get biased listening to CDs or DFW's Jack via the web ;)True a 8100 Optimod is not a 8400 or 8500 or Omnia processor, but the old 8100 is a box with such warmth, once set right, it can barely be touched! I will say 99.9 sounds better than KJAS in Jasper which also runs an 8100. Mike (Lout)'s audio has less low end than Bill's but I think that may be due to the Jones audio feed.BTW today I ran pass 1250 on the AM dial and saw they had dead air (again)...ggeessshhh

CW...I opened-up the "high end" on Liberty over the weekend. Please let me know if there are enought "highs" in there now and if it is a pretty decent mix of low, mid, and high. Thanks.

Sounds ok to me from what I have heard.....I dont expect it to be like a Orban 8500 processed station...but it sure sounds MUCH better than some of the CC stations in the BPT market ;)

Amen to that! I made the mistake of listening to KCOL today and it was plain awful. When there wasn't music, Al Caldwell sounded like he was broadcasting from the bottom of a well. Kill the reverb, please. Do you think that CC just doesn't care, or are they really that incompetent at engineering that their cluster sounds like crap?

Maybe both!!! I thought they took the reverb out for a while....evidently it went back in....Last time I could compare 92.5 and KLDE on Dick Bartley's show (ABC's Solid Gold Saturday night), the audio difference was totally ridiculous....KLDE was 100times better quality wise....KCOL just plain SUCKS.....glad I dont have to listen to them....wouldnt even if I had to..(side note; listened to KLVI recently...heard high end SSSSSS on audio...thought maybe I was in a null of the pattern and was hearing just sideband audio and no carrier...but this was in the daytime!!!...when they should be OMNI...I can only guess someone is playing with the audio there as well...GEESH folks hire a good engineer, set the audio RIGHT and leave the damn knobs alone!!!)

Those two are in sync and not delayed as KLDE. KHLA was a markedly superior to KCOL.
