AM Audio Processors

Howdy Folks, I know we have all used the old Opti-Mod 9100's for years. But I'm curious to hear what you all are using from the newer line of AM gear? Omnia AM One, Orban 9400, Inovonics 235? Others?

Thanks for the input Mario, I was more curious about broadcast possessors as I'm considering an upgrade from our 9100's.

Brad,
For talk we are using a compellor in front of a 6.7 khz 222. Have been curious(but too poor) to try an aphex voice processor to the 222, or thinking about the newer bw stuff

Well it's not a new, but I love my Omnia 3AM. Telos just shipped me a new PC Card with the 3FM software ... so now it's a 3FM. I have no
doubt that it's gonna sound great on my LPFM. I might try running my Compellor in front of it just to round the edges a little.

I'm using an Omnia 1 (AM version) and it works pretty well. I think you should also consider the BW Broadcast DSP-X AM http://www.bwbroadcast.com/audio-processors/dspx-am-audio-processor/31/product or the DSPX-Mini AM http://www.bwbroadcast.com/audio-processors/dspxmini-fm-se-audio-processor/26/product

My experience is they offer a lot of bang for the buck and have great factory support. (And no, I don't work for BW Broadcast, but I use a lot of their stuff.) Most processor manufacturers have loaner-evaluation programs so you can try them out for yourself. In the USA, SCMS distributes BW Broadcast and lots of other competing products. Bob Mayben is one of their reps and is very helpful. Maybe you should give him a call.

Second Bob Mayben call

I just got a bw300 from Bob. It's my second BW box, and includes bw audio processing in it. For a new translator. Used their internal before with a compellor in front, ver OK for talk. My understanding is it is the mini internal.

I also use a lot of BW gear, though I haven't tried the DSPX in AM service. I didn't like it much for FM, as the high band was too wide and was too noticeable for me. For AM, it could be fine.

There are a lot of 9100s still in operation in Washington State. I've sent a couple to Bill Sacks (www.optimod.am) for rebuilding, and the difference is amazing. They degrade over such a long period of time, you don't notice how sloppy the modulation control can get. When they come back, the box really puts a brick wall at whatever limit you set.

In my area, if you aren't using a 9100, you probably have a 9200. There are still a few CRL combinations around, and they can sound pretty decent. There's one 222 in this area, but it's only there because the station's all voice and not in a competitive situation.

Thanks for the input guys, I had seen some of the BW stuff but never got to test it. I'll have to check with my SCMS guy.

I like Optimod across the board AM and FM. There are three, 50KW stations in my area using Optimod, one is also IBOC they use a 9400 that lets you process the analog and digital separately. One station just replaced their old 9100 with a new 9400, the other uses an older 9200. There are a couple of Omnia AM in the area but the Optimods are louder. I like the presets Optimod gives you. They are a great starting point. Yes a little pricy but if you can afford a 9400 its all the processor you need.

Also just got a 5500 for an LPFM in the area and again the presets from the factory are great and give you a good starting point. The same LPFM did by a BW transmitter with the integrated processor but it is a backup/main operation where the Optimod feeds both transmitters. I tried the BW built in processor and it will put you on the air and it's OK. But the Optimod 5500 sounds alot better. But if the Optimod fails I would not hesitate to use the BW processor which was another reason to by the BW. It backs up the transmitter and processing.

But for AM if you can swing it get an Optimod either the 9300 or 9400.

SCMS sold me both the Optimod and BW box, great people!

A local FM installed the Wheatstone AirAura about 18 months ago. It is, hands down, the best voice processor I've ever heard and potentially could make an impact if it were offered for AM. However, for an AM, they only seem to offer the VP-8 which I have not heard, but might be worth a demo.

I recently installed my first "V2" BW transmitter. I put it in for a translator because it has everything... web-based GUI, FSK ID and audio processor.

So far, I like everything about it, except maybe the processor. They do point out that it's the "mini" version of their 4-band DSPX. It definitely is "lite", but better than the single band comp-limiter in their version 1 transmitters. For the price however, the box is hard to beat. If you really need more punch, you can always take some of the money you saved and put an outboard proc on it.
