AM changes

I don't pay much attention to the AM band but apparently 1350 KABQ dropped the liberal talk format they had since 2004 originally with Air America in favor of all podcasts back in May. I listened for a bit and they talk about random stuff. Some topics may still follow some liberal positions on social issues. But I figured this was likely to happen eventually as I believe Stephanie Miller and Thom Hartmann were the only ones left and their programs were being repeated throughout the day last I checked which had been a while. KTRC in Santa Fe I think still airs those shows but they seem to be doing more local talk now.

But also in Santa Fe it looks like KSWV 810 which also airs on 99.9 FM translator in Santa Fe has gone from Spanish-language programming to classic hits which seems to play a lot of 60s and 70s with an occasional 80s hit. It actually sounds closer to an oldies format. I don't think KABG still plays any 60s hits now so this station may have that advantage since Santa Fe has a lot of older folks there.

As for that AM station in Milan which is moving to Moriarty, it is now KEMR which will spell out "East Mountain Radio" and will apparently air on FM at 102.1 in the Edgewood-Moriarty area. Info is here: https://edgewood.news/east-mountain-radio-kemr-fm-coming-soon/ They plan to sign on September 1st and feature soft rock music and community info. It will be the second station unique to that area along with non-com 88.7 KXNM which also plays soft rock mixed alongside country hits which maybe works with listeners in that area. It will be operated by Vanguard or Radio Center or whatever they call themselves. I guess the soft rock would be similar to 101.3.

I kind of figured that the only reason from going from Milan to Moriarty was to have a translator. Especially since their AM facility is going to be so far east of Moriarty. They really needed their AM to be was far to the West of Moriarty as they could manage. Now I need to go look and find the facility parameters for the translator. Good to know about the 1 September date. However, my recollection is that they are a religious station. No competition for KXNM.

The linked article is from the end of April. Checked the FCC data base. The have applied to move the transmitter closer to Moriarty and downgraded the power from 1 kW to 400 W. Considering the size of the East Mountains, that is not going to make a dent. They still need to get West of Moriarty. And there is no mention of a 102.1 application for anywhere in the East Mountains. There are two (LP and Translator) duking (pun intended) it out already in Albuquerque. So I am not sure how a 102.1 is going to squeeze in. The 18.9 kW of KXNM does not produce any sort of reliable signal in Edgewood (but the are further out).

The translator licensed to broadcast KEMR is K252FS at 98.3 in Milan. Of course 98.3 is not a useable frequency in Edgewood-Moriarty with KABG and KBAC covering both sides. But since they have not filed to move it since they may need to establish where the AM will be first they certainly will not meet their September 1st goal. I don't believe either of the 102.1s in Albuquerque reach past the mountains so it may not have much effect though it depends on where it will be broadcasting from. But it is harder to find any open frequencies on the commercial FM band now.
