AM CRUISIN FORMAT

Anybody remember a 50's oldie format on AM there maybe 15 years ago. I know I heard it when we stayed on Maderia Beach for a few days. I don't remember freq but think it was in mid part of AM band. Thanks.

That would be the wonderful sound of "cruisin 1040" after 95.7 moved to the "new" office building on US19. Howard Hewes was there..and it was really a fun station to listen to. I think Marvin Boone had a presence there..as did Scott Robbins for a time..eventually sold to Genesis as WWBA I think.

Another terrific station in it's day was. 860/WAZE. Frank Ferarri was part of that as was a guy named Jonathan Apple. He ended up being a producer for channel 10's "Liz Richards Show"

Frank..would love some pics of that station

Hey Jeff...wow..just thinking that we haven't seen a Laurence post for a while or even a Grease Bullet spot..and here you are! Thanks for the mention. Yes, Apple was a very very talented guy. Wonder whatever happened to him. A real pro. To blow my own horn..it was great to be associated with really good stations that are no longer here and really were "cult" kind of situations. 86WAZE was a heck of a station and many really talented people were there. Bob Campo, Roger Schulman, John Boswell, Shauna Stevens and others...WHBO was the most fun in my career. Robbins, Hewes, you, and others. And of course my baby WLVU in Port Richey. Mike Taylor from W101 did a stint as did Ron Haley. Johnny Williams who was my MD after 10 years at W101. The irony was when Cox bought us, Robbins was their PD. Never forget the class Scott had. He called me at home and sincerely apologized for me and my staff being blown out. He meant it too.

I don't think I ever heard the 1040 (I live in South FL), but if anyone ever has time on their hands, they can drive east & south to Sebring, tune 10 kHz up (to 1050) and hear WJCM "Cruisin' Oldies." Lotsa 1955-63, and even TV themes from those days, and "Remember When?" reminders. (Too bad there are no announcements of title/artist.)

I think my favorite lead-ins to WJCM tunes go like this:

"Cruisin' Oldies, where you don't have to sit through THIS [plays about 10 seconds of a bland oldie, in their opinion], to get to THIS! [plays a Cruisin' Oldie]"

cd

I am fortunate to have a Howard Hewes 1040 aircheck, although the audio quality isn't the greatest. Also have a 1040 Scott Robbins, the day he won the greatest DJ contest. WHBO 1040 was a great station, local radio at its very best, and they didn't come any better than Howard Hewes and Scott Robbins.

860 WAZE...Rock and Roll for the Big Kids...

Remember trying to DX 910 down here in Naples at night. You had to listen intently as WSUN was down a few layers. Clever idea, but not real well executed.

WJCM is good and barely audible in North Ft. Myers. I sometimes get them on Florida 31 cruising up to tower sites in Charlotte county. That underrepresented era of rock 'n roll still can attract some attention to AM.
