AM Drive News Change at KTSA

Brent Boller is stepping down to take a BRAC-related job. Today's his last day on the air there.

Karen Clauss, most recently of Magic 105.3 slides in to the AM drive news chair across from Trey Ware.

I recall that Karen started her career at KTSA, back in 19**
Second what Fred said. I worked with her at KENS-TV, KHFI and WOAI.
She's the logical choice for the opening.

Trey said on the air this morning that he had hired her in a previous job when he was a PD somewhere here in town and he had recommended her for this job.

That would have been Magic 105. Trey was the original PD when they signed on in '85.

A little off topic, I apologize.

Is Trey Ware related to Ricky Ware? I used to listen to Ricky on KTSA in the 60's, when it was a top 40 station. I lived in East Terrill Hills and while walking to school, I passed by a house where a little kid told me his father was a DJ on KTSA and his name was Ricky Ware. I live in Nashville now and picked up KTSA one evening. Can't pick them up anymore, as we have a sports station on 560 that switches to it's night-time tower about 3 miles from my house.

Thanks.

Yes, he's Ricci's son.

Opps..I spelled Ricci's name wrong. Thanks for the info. I used to live near KTSA's four towers in San Antonio on Melton Drive. I listened to it or KONO when I lived there in the 60's.

First impressions...

Karen is giggly and more willing to carry some of the entertainment load than the very businesslike Brent. She definitely brings a change in tone to the morning show presentation at KTSA and might broaden the show's appeal to younger listeners.

BTW, Trey mentioned on the air that there had been a "flood" over the weekend in the Eisenhauer Rd. studios and Karen was broadcasting from what had formerly been a closet.

Younger listeners??? From where and how young, early 40's? Kids these days don't listen to radio and don't even know what AM radio is. They've either got a cellphone permanently attached to an ear or using some sort of electronic music storage/playing device packed with music downloaded from the internet. As for the new girl, her voice may be music to some ears, but irritatingly annoying to others. Over at Tragic 105.3 she could be avoided due to the chronically sad and perpetually repetitive playlist. Never cared much for the Bible thumping snake oil salesman's morality check tear jerking show or the "National Enquirer/Goofy Internet News" at the other end of the dial. I'm just fortunate to be able to hear KTRH or KRLD on the way to work. At least they know what a news and information radio station should sound like.

KTRH is holding its own and is ranked #9 in Houston.
But KRLD has lost a lot of its ratings luster and is now #20 in Dallas.

The 20 and 30-somethings seem to be calling into the sports talk stations and showing up at live broadcasts. Today's sports talk listener is tomorrow's news/talk listener. They'll start caring about investments and traffic reports eventually. ;)

I don't see how either of those morning shows are so different from WOAI. Jim Forsythe's in-depth reports at 7:15am on weekdays are excellent, IMO.

Now if you're looking for a good news wheel station to emulate, IMO the list is headed by at WBBM in Chicago. I listen to it all the time on my Internet radio, since it's the best one in this timezone. The San Antonio market could never afford to staff a 24-hour news wheel station. Much cheaper to stack the syndicated talkers and bookend the live shows in drive time.
