AM DXing in South Florida

Does anyone else have as hard a time as I do getting distant stations because of interference from Cuba? All up and down the dial all I get is the interval tone from Radio Reloj or some other news service from our buddies down south.

I never thought I would say this but I have gone from AM to FM to XM and I'm love what I hear on XM!

I don't miss the 7 minute commercial sets and the mediocre formats.

Cuba is not the only culprit here. The band has become so much more crowded, due to many stations that were previously daytimers now operating at night, and HD Radio stations causing adjacent channel interference. I used to DX a lot as a kid, and it's much harder now with so much interference. Its not all from Cuba anymore!

It's amazing that the digital information will actually carry somewhat on a skywave. My JVC tries to lock on to the HD signal from AM 620 in Tampa and occasionally does the same with 880 WCBS in New York. I read somewhere that a lot of stations are voluntarily discontinuing HD service at night even after the FCC lifted the restrictions due to interference issues.

Add to that the much higher power levels on AMs elsewhere in the Caribbean in the last several decades. There is now a 50 kw or greater Colombian on every channel from 540 to 1000, and many more 10 kw staitons on the 1010 to 1250 part of the band, too. Venzuela, similarly, has many 50 kw and 100 kw stations below 1200, and there are more higher powered Central American staitons too. All have no agreement witht he US, and can produced huge skywave signals in South Florida. In many cases, such stations are closer to Miami than most US clear channel 50 kw stations.

Very true, David. And strangelove, it's amazing how far the former WSUN (may those call letters rest in peace) gets out. I recall when they were simulcasting Bay News 9 24/7. I used to listen every night to catch up with the headlines, as I have family in the bay area.
