AM DXing Season 2014-15

When does it start?

1 station I'm going to try to DX this winter is WTAM 1100 from Cleveland from West Sacramento, by nulling out as best I can is KFAX

No official start as far as I know but I'd say late October through late February.

But good catches can still be had before or after that too.

I usually start listening to AM again around Halloween.

I'd say DX season roughly corresponds with standard time. As for WTAM, I think it should be doable in the Sacramento area. Not easy, but doable. They have a good nighttime signal.

I've tried for WTAM for years. Nothing yet. I've heard KFAX, KNZZ, KWWN and KFNX on 1100, but no Cleveland yet from WA. The only two OH stns I have are WLW and WCKY.

For better results on AM at night

12 or 1 am or 1 hour before Sunrise?

It depends. Sunset Skip will help you catch stations in your region -- or to the east of you -- that still are on day power.

Sunrise skip will help you get regional stations when they switch to day power, and maybe some heterodynes or audio from station in the Far East.

There is also a thing called 'grey line enhancement' that can come into play.

During the night hours sometimes conditions change a lot. I've heard Mexican stations as early as 8 p.m. that had disappeared after midnight. Then again, a couple times I"ve heard Mexican stations just before 6 a.m., once during an aurora, and the other times during regular DX conditions.

I've also heard some of my best DX between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m., but that ain't a rule.

The best thing is to just listen around whenever it's dark and you have your AM DX radio around. Anything can happen.
