Something like this can help a lot. It just close-couples to the internal antenna. Works similarly to the old "Selectenna", which unfortunately isn't made anymore.

Yes, you can. And you might have to wreck the radio in the process. The wires connected to the AM loopstick are tiny, and most recent radios are surface mount.

It would probably be better to just get an external antenna and save yourself the problems, like Jammerdave suggests with the Terk AM antenna.

As for your second question, it's the length and thickness of the loopstick that makes a difference in gain. Thicker loopstick = more gain than a thinner one. Longer loopstick usually = more gain than a shorter one. A thick short loopstick may have more gain than a long thin one.
