Does anyone know if a full power AM or FM could use Morse Code for the Top of the Hour Legal ID? I know that it is acceptible for translators.

Why would you WANT to use Morse Code for anything today?

Maybe if a station really hated its call letters/city of license, it could hide it in Morse Code. Also, Morse Code is heard better during DX tests. It is legal to ID in Morse Code.<P ID="signature">______________

According to the rule it says:
"When regularly required. Broadcast station identification announcements shall be made:
(1)
At the beginning and ending of each time of operation, and
(2)
hourly, as close to the hour as feasible, at a natural break in program offerings.
Television broadcast stations may make these announcements visually or aurally."

I don't think CW classifies as an "announcement", that's how I read the rule.

It could be one of those matter of opinion things here...

Hi,

I believe that morse would be leagal for the top of the hour ID. In the amteur radio service a repeater can ID in voice or in morse.

Also in the amteur service you can use any published standard.

So unless it is specifically forbidden in the FCC regulations, I believe it would be permitted.

Hide it in the carrier? ;)

It's faster than text messaging... Video here

But in seriousness... I would be surprised if the FCC would let you get away with IDing a regular broadcast station in Morse. Part 73 doesn't specifically say you *can't*, but it sure doesn't sound like part of the intent.

Translators are allowed to use Morse because back in the 1950s when they were first authorized, there was no other reasonably reliable & inexpensive way to automatically identify a transmitter on a remote mountaintop.

It seems Morse Code is still in use in some countries.

Read this article that so states this fact.
