AM/FM Simulcast

In the 60's, the FCC brought life to the FM band by declaring AM stations could only air the same programs on FM for a certain number of hours per day.

That created WMMR from WIP-FM. WPEN-FM launched more separate programming until eventually morphing into "Magic 103" WMGK. (There was a brief period when the new owners aired Oldies 95 on both AM & FM).

Now we have the return of WIP-FM and WPEN-FM, basically duplicating the AMs. Does anyone know if the FCC actually removed the duplication law from the regs?

Well... talk about a way to push HD Radio...
Bring all your AM's to FM, move the music formats to FM HD's (Jockless), then AM does god knows what...
The day that happens and radio is jockless is the day i stop listening to radio.
Slow but sure transition. its happenin ever so slowly but surely.
Hey... why not?
The Music's there, the transmitters are HD already, and they dont have to pay DJ's.
I know I know, most dont have HD's, but still.
The bottem is the dollar.

What's the point if that's the case?

Now Philadelphia has what San Francisco has had for a while now, an AM (with AM-HD) simulcast on an FM station.

I asked back then if AM-HD really sounds like FM given there is a real FM for reference. Many said real FM was far better than the FM wanna B.

Now it's Philly's turn. Does WIP-HD (AM) sound as good as WIP-FM?  ???  ::)  ;)

PS: Comparing WIP-FMHD to analog is optional.

From what I've heard of the web stream (not sure its a good nor fair comperison), I believe they are useing the WIP AM HD feed to feed the anolog FM of 94.1.
The highs to me sound almost unnatural, unles that's left over YSP compression>?\

The other poster who stated the FCC removed the AM/FM simulcast rule from the books is correct. However, the FCC still prohibits SAME BAND simulcasts if the signals overlap. I'm not sure if it's intersect or overlap or if a certain percentage overlaps. I suppose it could also be based on market coverage. I've been told the FCC has granted waivers to the rule, and they will allow Longley-Rice contours in certain situations.
