AM/FM tuners w/ numeric keypad entry

Hi all

We've seen communications receivers w/ keypads for entering frequencies, but have you ever seen this feature on an AM/FM tuner?

My Sony ST-S261 has this exact function! - hit the DIRECT button then use the memory buttons (numbered 1 to 0) to enter the frequency - eg 'DIRECT 1-0-2-7-0' for 102.70 FM. Nice!
I've never seen this on any other tuner.

This tuner also has RDS & rotory manual tuning. Although most commercial FMs here in Sydney scroll the radiotext too fast for it to be readable - useless.....

Most decent World Band radios have the direct entry keypad, but I have never seen a standard AM/FM radio with one. Then again, very few radios here in the states feature RDS. They're mostly in high-end car stereos here. Maybe the new HD radios have this feature, but I have yet to see one.... ;)

Sounds like a pretty interesting radio though.

The infamous GE "Great Awakening" clock radios from the 80s had this, and the keypad was known for deoxidizing, and not working properly.

I've still have one of those Great Awakening radios. The clock works but the keypad is shot. It's a major deal when the time change happens, thats the only time I try to use the keypad. It was a great radio in its day, though.

Back in the '90s, I had a Sony home stereo receiver that had "direct" tuning. I can't say it was keypad because the numbererd (1-0) buttons were in a line below the display. The receiver was only about $100 back in '91 I believe. I believe some the the Sony home receivers (Stereo or home theater) still have the "direct" feature.
