AM Frequency of the Week 1020

Crystal Lake, IL......

Days: Splatter from local WNVR (1030). Before WNVR came on, A veru weak WPEO from Peoria sometimes came through.

Nights. Usually KDKA with a fair-weak signal. Sometimes KMMQ from the Omaha area is present underneath. I've alsoheard KJJK Fergua Falls, MN. Presumably on 1.4kw day power (ND).

Other Location" When I was on a 1994 visit to Maui , KTNQ was a Beast. Easily the strongest main;amdsignal.
 
From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Days: WPEO Peoria, IL, a 1 kW daytimer. Weak but there with paid religion.

Nights: KDKA Pittsburgh almost always. Usually pops up a bit after adjacent WBZ late on winter afternoons.

Surprises: Once during an auroral evening at least 30 years ago, HJDQ Medellin, Colombia, 10 kW, ID as "Emisora Claridad." And early on 10/6/2020, KCKN Roswell, N. Mex., 50 kW, thanks to the Sony ICF-2010 and a Tecsun AN-200 loop placed just so to null out KDKA.
 
Tyler, TX:

Daytime nothing. 40 years ago, 1020 was slated to have a local daytimer constructed here in Tyler. It was never built and the CP expired.

Sunset brings up RM XECADN Cadereyta Jimenez, Nuevo Leon with a fair, steady signal.
 
East Tennessee: Nothing too exciting. Blank in the day KDKA at night. I think I caught a whiff of WRIX, Homeland Park, SC at sunset last week.

Retro/other: Pretty much KDKA. In Lafayette IN and Quincy IL it was a weak WPEO during the day.

Sometime in the 1990s I got a Carribean-based Religious station but don't remember the details.
 
Denver, CO -
Daytime - Nothing.
Nighttime - I wouldn't call it dominant, but the usual occupant of the channel here is KCKN Roswell, NM, Radio Visión Cristiana, with gospel in Spanish. Top-of-hour ID gives the IDs for the entire network, doable since it's a relatively small network. The signal comes in and out and is of moderate strength at best. The station also seems to be undermodulating.

Retro - Not much but I did find a note from the 1970s indicating that I had received WCIL Carbondale, IL in O'Fallon, Missouri. This was probably around local sunset with some enhanced groundwave (plus being in 1010 KXEN's nulls) but my notes from that time are sparse.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Nothing

Nights: KCKN Roswell, NM is usually dominant at 428 miles west with Christian programming in Spanish. Nulling KCKN, I hear a weak KOKP Perry, OK at 222 miles north with sports talk. Occasionally, a weak KDKA Pittsburgh, PA at 1077 miles northeast, can be heard with local news/weather, but it is not a regular. One time catch is Radio Artemisia from Cuba.

Days WPEO weak, nights KDKA wwith
A ok signal. Out west and Hawaii KTNQ is strong at night
 
1020 daytimes / midday holds nothing here. Heck -- except for a few locals and a stray regional station, the whole dial sounds like a million eggs* frying aboard a space launch.
One afternoon around SSS in March of 1993, WKZE from the NW corner of CT came in for an ID and a nice tape. It was one of the first 'new' DX stations for me after moving here to PA, following the setting of the Totals List back to 000 for another bash at the dials. In sort of a reverse karma or Rorschach way, they were the last 'new' logging on the Totals List back near JFK Airport one SSS. WINS on 1010 was no threat ; a 90-degree null.
One eve a few years later here, the Turks & Caicos station was there. That's got to be some high school rivalry, eh? (Not quite a year later they were heard and taped again, on 1025.)
KDKA is the usual nighttime dweller, even with (imo) a terrible signal for a 50,000 watt omni. They should be there here in the day. It's hard to decide which signal is more flaccid -- KDKA's or WGY 810's.

* It is possible to freeze an egg on the sidewalk -- and quickly. We did it a few years ago in February. Came out like a sodden 45 RPM record. A few hours later it was gone. No doubt some critter(s) got at it.

Detroit, MI suburbs:

Days: Empty, or weak KDKA, depending on the quality of your receiver.

Nights: Solid KDKA. Several weeks ago I also received WLVJ Boynton Beach, FL while doing some homework for this week's FOTW. Seemed like an unlikely catch, but confirmed via remote SDR several miles away from their transmitter. Perhaps they were on day power?
Cuba also observed on this frequency from time to time.
 
Hartland, VT:

Nothing days, KDKA Pittsburgh nights.

Meriden, CT:

WHDD Sharon days, weak, with miscellaneous public radio programming. KDKA nights.
 
Wilmington Delaware

Days - Weak signal from WWAC Ocean City NJ with Country Music. Signal is much stronger in Central and Southern Delaware.

Nights - Disappointing signal from KDKA Pittsburgh. Most nights there is splatter from WBZ next door on 1030 or WINS on 1010.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: very weak WPEO (Peoria, IL)
Nighttime: KDKA rules the frequency

DX/RETRO: others heard on this frequency include KCKN (Roswell, NM) during a DX test running 10kW non-directional back in 2006, but also heard few times with their regular Spanish language religious programming (Radio Vision Cristiana). Also heard KJJK (Fergus Falls MN), KMMQ (Plattsmouth, NE), WJEP (Ochlocknee, GA) in the past. Most recent new log on this frequency is Radio Artemisa from Cuba which was heard several times since 2021.

Back in 1990's Caribbean Christian Radio from Turks & Caicos used to be a regular log in the Chicago area on this frequency. Couple stations that are no longer on the air were also logged in Chicago: Radio Mundial, Venezuela and Radio Reloj, Cuba.
 
Clifton, New Jersey

Days: Mostly splatter from 1010 WINS New York, NY.

Nights: It's KDKA "100.1 FM & AM 1020 KDKA" Pittsburgh, PA with some splatter from WINS depending on the radio and the bandwidth setting.
 
From west Houston TX, daytime, nothing but slop from local KLAT 1010. KLAT is a real problem on this frequency. However, after sunset KCKN comes up with KLAT nulled. At night, KCKN dominates but have also heard KDKA and KOKP, sports from Perry OK, once or twice.

I recall in the early 70's, DXing from Tulsa OK, KDKA was in the clear at night. When they were off on Monday mornings, KTNQ (then KGBS) was easily heard. I read somewhere that KGBS was a daytimer in those days but came on at night only when KDKA was off on Monday mornings (9pm Sunday night-2am Monday morning LA time).

Reminds me of when 1160 in Chicago was daytimer WJJD (now WYLL). WJJD was allowed to operate during nighttime hours when KSL was off. As a practical matter, this meant WJJD signed on at 4am. Then signed off later for a while before coming back on at local sunrise. Strange.

And KPOP/KGBS could sign on at sunrise in Pittsburgh which meant as early as 4 AM in the Summer, and they ran Spanish language in the first hours before 6 AM.
