AM Frequency of the Week 1020

From northwest San Antonio:

Day: Blank

Sunset: It’s KCKN in Roswell, NM, when aiming NW and KOKP in Perry, OK, when aiming NE.

Night: KCKN dominates, and KOKP is in/out. Radio Artemisa in Cuba can sometimes be heard under KCKN. When propagation is especially good, KDKA will mix with KOKP or overtake it for brief bits.

Sunrise: Just KCKN and KOKP.

DX/Retro: I used to hear XEKH “Top Music” in Querétaro at night before it was retired. Also, I heard XEPR in Poza Rica, Veracruz, once at nighttime mixing with KCKN.

Over the years at times when KCKN was off air, I’ve heard the following stations one time each: Cubans Radio Reloj and Radio Guamá, XEOU “La Mejor” (now retired) in Huajuapan de León, and KTNQ in Los Angeles.

Chicago by the lakeshore:

A pretty uneventful frequency for me. I can sometimes get a trace of WPEO Peoria in the right places, during the day. At night I've only recorded KDKA in Pittsburgh. Maybe I should monitor this frequency more often.

Central Kentucky:

Days: Nothing or in winter months KDKA starts to appear around 4 in the afternoon

Nights: KDKA. Signal varies. Most nights it's ok, some nights weaker than others. Sometimes there's a little splatter from WBZ(!)

It's too bad there are so few stations in the Eastern time zone on 1020 besides KDKA. "Nothing days, KDKA nights" seems to be the usual up and down the East Coast. I wonder if anyone has heard the Connecticut daytimer, WHDD, during the "gray line" hours.
