AM Frequency of the Week - 1060 kHz

Unfortunately here in Austin,Texas, 1060-AM KFIT, licensed to nearby Lockhart, Texas is a radio station that consistently violates FCC rules and stays on the air well into the night at full power even though it is a daytimer that is required to sign off at local sunset. Why the FCC doesn't fine them, I don't know. This has been going on for over a year now, every night. That being the case, all we hear at night in our city is the illegal daytimer at 1060.

I've never heard the Austin station here in Houston. Even with a local 1070, Austin is close enough I ought to get something. But then I've never heard 810 from San Antonio, either.

I hadda giggle at your reception of KYW in Florida. A few years ago I was lolling in a nice lawn chair with a gin-and-tonic in my Folks' driveway, waving the barefeet GE SR II to and fro. The Folks used to live in Lady Lake/The Villages, between Ocala and Leesburg. It was*just* after sunset. Outside sashays the wifester. She was born just outside Philly but has a Scranton accent like her Folks had because she's been handicapped/homebound all these years.

'You're outside on this beautiful night listening to THEM?!?' she scolds. 'Don't you get enough of them back at home?!?'

The Pooch (as I fear most females do not , and especially while on vacation) doesn't understand DX. DXing to them is like passing them a road map in the passesnger seat of a car and asking where we are.
Complete and utter bewilderment, lol. 'No, you're holding it upside down.'

Last year I got this reaction from her as I was tuning the dial of a new Grundig S450.
'You spent HOW much for that nice new radio just to listen to STATIC?'

I explain to her that DXing is civilized hunting for domesticated modern males. No animals get harmed, and there can be lots of trophies to glean.

Either way, I heard KYW in Florida. And despite her interference and objections, so did she.

Really sorry about WNOE/WLNO. Wow, were they a tough-as-blazes catch up on Long Island.

Daytime: nothing
Nights: CKMX Calgary with all comedy format.

Wow, I didn't know WLNO is off the air.

While I wasn't a fan of their format, they were a daytime powerhouse (almost local sounding) out at the Gulf and a trace of their signal could even be heard daytime in Tampa in between all the usual static.

At night, 1060 is dominated by the Cuban station but once in a while, KYW is listenable in the background. That's very rare, though.

Back when I first moved here, KYW was easily heard most nights.

Have you ever heard XEEP (Mexico City) where you are? As recently as 2-3 years ago, they were very easy duty in the Pensacola area at night with WLNO nulled. The last couple of years at St. Pete Beach/Treasure island, it's pretty much been all Cuba. Although I seem to remember XEEP around sunrise once or twice.

It's been a while since I've heard XEEP anywhere, and I think they may have migrated to FM. (They also used to be on 49 meter shortwave).

If David is lurking around here, perhaps he can fill us in on the current status.

Honestly, I've never listened for XEEP and didn't even know of them on that frequency because where I'm from, all I wanted to hear was KYW.

Steve, It's funny you mention accents. Having been down in Florida for so long, I notice the distinct accent whenever I visit back home as soon as I arrive at the airport in Philadelphia or if I'm listening online from down here to New Jersey 101.5 and hear some of the callers talk.

When I was up there last year, I never got to listen to KYW but this thread made me want to check out their online stream and it's nice to hear they still have that old teletype sound effect in the background.

It's not loud enough to hear if by chance I happen to get the weak signal of KYW down here.

Same here, in Port Alexander, AK it's CKMX at night. Until not all that long ago they were classic country, but now they run a comedy format I think.

Yes, CKMX is "Funny 1060" and has been since around 2013.

This is one AM Frequency I never did.
Summer daytime, nothing. Winter daytime, CKMX Calgary usually comes in with their comedy format, weakly.
Sunsets is a mix of CKMX and KBGN Caldwell, ID with religious programming.
Nights is usually CKMX, again. However, I have heard KDYL South Salt Lake, UT quite often lately with China Radio International programming. They should be 149 watts, and the signal is no 149 watts to me. Sometimes I'll hear KRCN Longmont, CO in the mix with Catholic programming, and a few times have heard KGFX Pierre, SD (Classic Country).
In auroral conditions, usually KFOY Reno, NV comes in with NBC Sports. I did hear KDUS Tempe, AZ once, ALSO NBC Sports! XEEP Mexico City has also been heard here a couple of times, and I have a one-time log of KKVV Las Vegas.

Would like to hear
KTNS Oakhurst, CA - Shows they are a Soft AC format, and 5KW days. Should be possible at sunset, but CKMX is still very strong at that hour.
KYW Philadelphia - In my dreams...maybe on the best eastern conditions evening ever?
