AM Frequency of the week: 1110

West central Georgia:

Night: All WBT

Critical Hours: Sometimes I receive KFAB before the sun rises in Omaha. WTOF (Mobile AL - 10,000 watts - religious) and KXTT (Dallas TX - 50,000 watts - Asian) sometimes interfere with WBT during the early morning but they disappear later in the morning.

Day: WBT occasionally in winter

Other catches on this frequency include WTIS Tampa (Spanish) and KGFL Clinton AR (oldies).

Good song :)

+1, Probably got a few spins on WBT. At least when they were running Dick Bartley's syndicated Saturday Night Oldies show.

I also presumed that that must've been a big song on the Milwaukee suburb of Wauwatosa. Back in the days when WOKY (920) and WRIT (1340) were locked in a red hot top-40 battle. :)

From Huntsville AL, Day and critical hours WSLV Ardmore AL. Sometimes WTOF in Bay Minette during critical hours. Nighttime a very weak WBT, sometimes KFAB. When KMOX runs IBOC after dark it bleeds over into 1110.

Yakima WA

Days - very weak KBND Bend OR (News/Talk), strength goes up with the big loop in a relatively quiet area.
Nights - KBND dominates with usually KFAB Omaha (News/Talk) under or even over it. Once in a blue moon KRDC Pasadena CA (Radio Disney Country) is very weakly heard N-S.
At sunset sometimes KRPA Oak Harbor WA (last I heard it was Punjabi) will make it in. Ex-KWDB. When I lived near Seattle, KWDB was weak but audible. They used to be a full service station for Whidbey Island.

Days:::Nothing audible ( some splatter from adjacent stations ). I have tried for KLIB, but I don't hear anything.

Nights:::The first station that hits my radio is 20KW KRDC ( radio Disney ) from Los Angeles. Not the greatest signal, but very listenable with your average fade and static. Next on the list is KLIB. When fade overcomes KDRC, KLIB takes over for a few minutes. Unfortunately, no KFAB...I have better luck at getting KBND from Bend, Oregon before KFAB could punch threw the two other stations.

From Baldwin County, Alabama, near the Gulf of Mexico:

Days: Buddy Tucker Association's "Tower of Faith" WTOF in Bay Minette is not a bad signal considering that it's a good 30 miles away across terrible ground conductivity.
Nights: This might seem odd, but I've actually heard KFAB Omaha more than I have WBT Charlotte. Neither seems to beam any appreciable signal my way, but WBT comes closer, yet is much more rarely heard. Not sure why that is.

Also, I don't think any mention of WTOF/WBCA would be complete without mentioning how often that station would "forget" to power down at sunset and blast 10 kW nondirectional all over the south. People really complained about it!

I think part of the deal with CKTY was protecting (what's now) WTAM from Cleveland, which is clearly audible in soutwestern Ontario. When I came on the board in 2006, IIRC, there was an engineer here from the Cleveland 1100 who complained about CKTY on a few occasions. I'm not quite sure why becasue as I remember it, the interference he was complaining about was in Canada. I used to make the run from Cleveland to Detroit, Chicago, and Indianapolis and have no memory of CKTY ever being a pest. As always, I stand to be corrected.

And as for WMBI, I'm sure Moody had no interest in building a multi-tower array for 1110, when they already had a very robust FM signal. I had heard that the Moody AMs were on the block. WMBI would probably be very attractive to a brokered, ethnic, or another religious broadcaster because the AM signal does a good job of covering most of the Chicago metro. And any such buyer could probably easily upgrade to multi-tower night service if they were so inclined.

Pretty much the same sort of story for WDLM (960), their sister station in East Moline, IL They're already operating fulltime on 960 with 1kw day and 100 watts night, DA-1 (north-south).

I think the engineer from WTAM you referred to was probably Ted Alexander. He came and measured WKBZ/WGVS contours before upgrading WJW/WKNR to 50 kW Day. He got way past Lansing before he got any measurable signal from Muskegon. CKTY 1110 Day DA was less restrictive. But they had to protect WUNN 1110 in Mason. On 1250, as CKJD, they had something like 16 towers total, and protected WXOX 1250 Bay City, which was then nondirectional.

About 15 years ago contacted WBT regarding WTOF being on past their sign-off time. Not sure what was said but WTOF quit, at least for a while.

WBT has a tight pattern which nulls to the west due to protection to KFAB. Even listeners west of Charlotte such as in Gastonia have trouble hearing WBT. In the 1990's WBT put an FM on 99.3 to cover this part of their market.

Finally caught KFAB booming into the south bay!! Helps having a good ( loop ) antenna though! The signal comes in strong at times, but there's three other stations ( KLIB and KRDC, and KBND ) making it difficult to listen to fully time.

WMBI 1110 noted back on the air this morning.

I noticed that WMBI was off during the weekend, but other than something unintelligible on 1100, I didn't hear anything of note on either 1110 or the two first adjacents.

In Carmichael, CA

Day & Night KLIB Roseville

On Sunday when KLIB was off, I was listening to KRDC

I wish I can get it, when I go back to Vallejo, I try for it
