AM Frequency of the Week: 1120

I can think of 550s I snagged in Dayton, even with WKRC nearby. WDUN (likely running day facilities), WAYR,(same), WSVA (sunset) and KTRS (sunset).

As long as we're OT and talking about 550, have any of you guys in the Chicago area ever snagged WSAU? I have...but only a couple of times, and only at night.
I have never heard WSAU at my home location. Usually I have to get north of Lake Geneva to hear it.

I have logged them (2) times at night here in Overland Park, Kansas. On both occasions, it was right after evening critical hours.

I've heard WSAU... just not in Chicago. One time I was stuck in a hotel in Madison, WI for several days and that was one of the stations I heard. I've gotten WKRC in Chicago. It's less common at night than KTRS or WGR, but it sometimes makes an appearance.

West Central Georgia:
Day - WXJO Douglasville GA (recently silent)
Night - KMOX loud and clear, one of the best 50kw station signals here
Critical hours - WKCE Maryville TN

San Jose, California

Days::A strong 5Kw local, KZSJ out of Gilroy.

Nights:: 50Kw KPNW out of Eugene, Oregon, dominates the frequency. Underneath, is my thorn, a weak but decent KZSJ if I rotate the radio do south east. These two prevent KMOX from being heard. Sure be nice to see if we ( west coast ) can get KMOX, if KPNW decided to do some maintenance and go off the air for a night or two.

I know I keep hearing they (KMOX) has one of the best signals, but to me, the best signal I've heard out here on the west coast is WGN 720 out of Chicago. That strong signal pushes KDWN out of the way every so often. Very impressive for the distance. I can still hear it under KWDN even when it's not dominating.

Here in Ohio, obviously much closer to both WGN and KMOX, both skywave signals are among the best every night. The 1120 frequency certainly is a little more skywave-friendly than 720, but it's a rare night when they're not heard pretty much equally well here.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: A weak KTXW in Manor, TX (just NE of Austin) with splatter from local 1130 KTMR (especially NW/SE).

Sunset: KTXW is stronger, and KETU pops up underneath for a while before sign-off. KMOX eventually comes up and mixes in. A little later and to the NW, a weak KCRN can sometimes be heard amidst the splatter.

Night: KTMR signs off, but 1130 KWKH comes in so strong that it keeps the splatter going. KMOX usually has a good signal but is subject to fades. XEPOP in Puebla is often heard underneath and sometimes takes over during those fades. It's heard even better when aiming SE. KTXW is only heard occasionally under KMOX after dropping to 155 watts.

Sunrise: KMOX is weaker with KTXW mixing in and eventually taking over as it goes to day power. KETU mixes in for a while when it signs on. I've heard KCRN once at sign-on.

DX/Retro: At 5:47 p.m. CT this afternoon, WTWZ faded in with bluegrass music and DJ talk (matching the webstream). It was in for about 15 minutes. This is a new log for me, and I presume the station was still on 10 kW day power.

WKAJ from upstate NY was coming in well here in NJ last night -- far too well to be on their 400-watt night pattern. They gave a weather forecast for "tomorrow, May 10th" even though tomorrow actually would've been May 24th!

Also coming in and out was WPRX from Connecticut with their salsa music. No sign of KMOX.
