AM Frequency of the Week - 1130 kHz

I wonder what the location is, somewhere in Canada i assume, where you hear WISN, KTCN, and WDFN all at the same time?

I bet that sounds beautiful. You'd have to be pretty far north, though. This time of year I bet the DX is pretty darn good up there with the cold nights.

Yeah....I'd guess you'd have to be pretty far up into Ontario to join the party with that threesome. Timmins or Kapuskasing might work. I actually have spent a night in Kapuskasing (summer 1994), but don't remember anything specific about the DX there.

Maybe Kenora, ON, where cyberdad claims to have gotten KIRO, WDSM, KCMO, WOR and Cuba all on 710?

Kenora is an excellent DX location. And about a half hour north of town there's a huge isolated lakefront resort (used to be owned by Radisson) that's even better. Arrowhead Lodge IIRC. Between the two....I've probably stayed in the area more than a half-dozen times in the 90s....a couple of those late winter/early spring. Handy place to stop for the night between Winnipeg and Duluth...both of which were home to customers at the time.

The AM dial was fairly blank in the daytime due to the remoteness and lousy ground conductivity.  There were weak but reliable signals from Winnipeg, and local 1kw CJRL on 1220. But things absolutely lit up at night.

Kenora is too far west for WDFN, and maybe also too far west for WISN.  My memory on 1130 is of a strong signal from Minneapolis (then WDGY) alone on the channel.   The locations I suggested for the "three amigos" on 1130 are a few hundred miles to the east.

710?  It was mostly WDSM, but it was one of those channels where most of the time there were several signals jockeying for the top.

My recall is that it was just after sunset. Car radio....presumably KIRO on day ND pattern. By no means was it a regular on my visits. As surprised as I was, the time I heard Cuba up there surprised me even more. Kenora is actually reasonably far west. Off the top of my head, I'm going to say about 130 miles north-northwest of International Falls. Almost that far directly east of Winnipeg.

Its probably been at least a dozen years since I've been there.

I think I found the perfect spot for the most satisfying 1130 KHZ DX-pedition. Western side of Nunavut which is just above Hudson's Bay.

We could leave tomorrow and be there in a week or two. Someone needs to bring a generator, and does anyone have a pair of XXXL long underwear to spare? Those with direct experience in log home building and furniture construction are strongly encouraged to sign up.

I can't think of anything else. Wait, I just did. Unless someone else wants to, I'll bring the receivers and antennas.

Who's with me?

I think it's a great idea. Not only would it solve the 1130 mystery, but you'd probably get some great DX from over the pole.
Unfortunately I can't go, but when you get there let us know about everything you hear--oh and don't forget to bring a recorder so we can all hear the DX. ;D

From south Pittsburgh I get WASP-AM in Brownsville, PA.
This time of year it is often overrun with WBBR skipping in from
New York in the afternoons. Station runs syndicated oldies.

This station used to be 5kW directional and put a very strong signal into
my house. That changed a few years back when they lost one of their towers
to a PA Turnpike expansion. They cut back to 1kW nondirectional at that time.
I notice the late day WBBR interference is now worse, and I also get some sort
of harmonic interference from WMNY 1360.

Here in McKinney just north Of Dallas.

Day: A Weak KWKH, some days clear as can be, others not so much.
Night: KWKH can either be REALLY strong (running on that 12.5 K STA) or moderate with many fades and constant battle with the Mexican Station.
