AM frequency of the week: 1130 khz

What do you guys get on 1130?

Here in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago, WISN (Milwaukee) has a near-local grade signal during the day. Then at night, WISN goes from 50kw down to 10kw, and throws a very severe null in my direction. It thus effectively vanishes, despite their massive antenna farm being only a little more than 30 miles away.

What's left is most likely KWKH, although not very reliable. WBBR sometimes shows up. Less frequently WDFN. WDGY also used to occasionally pop in around sunrise/sunset. CKWX has also put in a few brief appearances during the past couple of winters.

Nothing comes to mind during the day, I've recieved WISN around sunset in Knoxville, TN. When I lived in the Dayton, Ohio area there was WEDI (the old WCTM), Eaton, OH. When they would be off it was a weak WDFN

When I was in college in Toledo back in the late 1990s, it was all WDFN from Detroit daytime, although not as strong as you might think with their towers being less than 40 miles away. Even then, they were directional away from Toledo during the day. At night, forget it. I never listened to 1130 driving up I-75 to assess the signal on the backside of the pattern.
Here in Columbus, nothing much. Maybe WBBR.

About 35 miles SE of Cyberdad I get mostly the same results. I would add that during the night hours WBBR seems to rise up more than KWKH at my location especially in winter.
WDFN comes in around sunrise and Minneapolis (WDGY) used to come in at sunset especially in late fall.

Just two catches on 1130 during the 'downbeat' DX career here in NE PA -- WBBR and WDFN.
The WDFN catch was a fairly recent one, though ; 12-22-'12.

In Valley Stream, just outside NYC and as such the first village on Long Island's south shore, Detroit's WCAR used to nibble away, sometimes surprisingly loud, at WNEW's Gene Klavan show shortly after sunrise, in winter. From the linked Radio-Locator map you can see that conductivity dead spot from which even the 50,000 omni WBBR signal is not immune. Valley Stream is located just above the 'r' in the words 'New York'.
All of the New York stations with towers in NJ have conductivity trouble to the southeast, as though they all ram into a brick wall near the 'B' in Brentwood. Back before they built the huge suburbs of Levittown and East Meadow, people living there were probably eating radioactive potatoes from all that energy going their way.

One has to conclude that WCAR/WDFN already was on their more generous daytime pattern as well, with the dawn just starting to break in Detroit, and a bit of SRS propogation still active.

I once got a feeble, gurgling WDGY Minneapolis during a rare WNEW absence.

Never heard WISN or KWKH though, either from here in NEPA or from near JFK Airport.

East-central Iowa: Nothing daytime, or a weak KILJ Mt. Pleasant, IA, if anything. Nighttime, mostly KTLK (the former WDGY/KFAN) the majority of the time. Occasionally WBBR or KWKH, neither on a regular basis. I think I have heard CKWX make an occasional appearance, too. I can't recall that I've ever ID'ed CKWX but pretty sure it has shown up, from the sound of the signal.

Days it's mainly a weak KQRR Mt Angel, OR (Russian). At sunset CKWX and KQRR mix and the interference problems go a long ways north.
Nights it's always CKWX. I have picked up KRDU Dinuba, CA once but whenever I null CKWX I pick up weak foreign language, likely KQRR on 490 watts. I DID pick up KWKH Shreveport, LA one evening, with a song match. Already been four years. Never heard it again but years ago they would sometimes have problems not going directional at night.
My next one to try on 1130 is likely KBMR in Bismarck, or KSDO in San Diego. Been listening for years for KSDO especially but never pops up!

KWKH was on STA for 12.5kw ND nights while they rebuilt their DA a few years back (along with sister station KEEL/710). The result here in northern Illinois was a much better signal. As for KSDO....in all my years of travel to the west coast, I don't think I've ever heard them anywhere north of L.A.....and they're tough enough there!

Interesting frequency what with all the short-spaced stations and such.

Days
WBZI Xenia OH - Hear them but weak

Sunrise & Sunset
WISN Milwaukee
WALQ Carrville AL - Only once
WYXE Gallatin TN
WRRL Rainelle WV
KWKH Shreveport LA

Night
WLBA Gainesville GA - Apparently they hadn't shut down as required since they are a daytime only operation
WBBR NYC - Often in the mix
WDFN Detroit - Occasionally

I've heard WISN and KWKH at night also

Daytime, 1130 is WHHW Hilton Head with a cool standards format. Can be heard all up and down Carolina coast. WBBR comes in during twilight and at night well. KWKH has also come in here, many times.
