AM Frequency of the Week: 1190

Thanks for the links!
(Also, I agree that pound-for-pound, WOWO is probably the strongest AM signal in St. Marys and Celina among those heard day and night, with the possible exception of WLW. I'd put WIMA and WJR right behind those two.)
Although I did not know it at the time, I got first-hand experience with the backside of WOWO's pattern during a drive to Chicago in the spring of 1990. I was going there for the weekend with my mom and my aunt (both St. Marys natives who listened to WOWO growing up). The signal was fine until we were northwest of Indianapolis on I-65, but once it got dark, it started coming in and out furiously and never improved. My aunt finally noticed the poor reception as we were getting closer to Chicago and switched to one of the strong Chicago 50Ks.
I actually found some old tapes of oldies from WOWO I made back around 1989 and 1990. I hope to be have time to listen to them soon.

I had not listened to this frequency much in a while since it’s so close to local WOAI. These past couple of weeks, I’ve been checking it out at various times of day/night, and it has proved to be more interesting than I originally thought.

Daytime, of course, is nothing but WOAI splatter.

Prior to sunset, a weak WMEJ in Bay St. Louis, MS, often pops up for a while amongst the splatter with urban gospel preaching and music. Later, XECT “Contacto 1190” in Monterrey, XEWK “W Radio” in Guadalajara, and news talker KFXR in Dallas all start to come in. Almost exactly two years ago I once logged KJII in White Hall, AR, around sunset. It was playing blues and classic r&b.

At night it's, XEWK and XECT. One night last March I logged a very weak KQQZ.

At sunrise it’s still XEWK and XECT, with KNUV in Tolleson, AZ, coming in if I aim NW. KNUV faked me out for a while until I heard an “Onda 1190” station ID. It’s a Spanish-language station that airs the Mexican Grupo Formula programming. Also, WMEJ can sometimes be heard popping in and out weakly. KFXR pops up last when it goes to daytime power and is the last to fade out.

Update to my response last week: I picked up WOWO at around 5-530pm EST Sunday night. Couldn't get the ID but I kept hearing Indianapolis during a hockey game, figured out they are the Indy Fuel, found their opponent at that time (Ft Wayne Komets), and noticed their 1190 affiliate is WOWO. I lost it after about 5-10 minutes which must have been when they went down to night power.

Its 1190-WAFS, Atlanta (a local) at night WOWO most nights, with a few nights of KQQZ.

North of Atlanta, GA

In Northwest Arkansas -

Daytime - Usually KREB, Bentonville, AR

Nighttime - KQQZ, Fairview Heights, IL

(Or, a mix of stations, or noise)

From the Alabama gulf coast, daytime is an extremely weak WMEJ Bay St. Louis. I can usually only hear it with a quiet location and a loop.

At night, it's usually WOWO pretty clear, but KFXR Dallas also has been heard regularly. I've also heard KQQZ St. Louis once.

Edit to add: Almost forgot, but I *have* heard WLIB once down here. That was a real surprise.
