AM Frequency of The Week: 1220

What have you guys gotten on 1220?

For me, it's KPJC Salem, OR (religious, 1kw day/171w night), and KDOW San Jose, CA (business news, 5kw). Should get more, but graveyard mess splatter from 1230 bleeds into 1220 most nights, and it's hard to hear anything.

P.S: Patrick Martin, a DXer in Seaside, OR, has gotten several good ones on 1220. In his IRCA logs, I see him logging CJRB-MB, XEB-DF Mexico, KDDR-ND, KPJC-OR, and WHKW-OH.

WFAX decent reception from Falls Church, VA (that's the name of a town very close to Wash. DC), tower over there 24 miles away. A daytimer with religious format. At night, it's WHKW Cleveland, OH regular here, also religious.

I've seen the IRCA forums. I think Mr. Martin uses a beverage antenna. I could only use a loop in the apartment. :(

Mostly some splatter from 1210 KPRZ, otherwise mostly weak unIDs. A few weeks ago I did hear KHTS Canyon Country, about 150 miles or so away, with something like under 250 watts nighttime, and directional away from me.

Here in East Texas, sometimes a low-power or two like Weatherford TX or Oklahoma City, usually not able to ID. 1220 is always dominated by XEB Mexico City. I heard Cleveland once but that was years ago.

Nothing during the day, but an extreme mess at night due to splatter from local 1230. Though in some places in my area, I get a very weak signal of KHTS 1220.

I'd love to hear XEB again one day....aside from online, of course.

1220 in the day is splatter from 47kW 1210 WNMA....at night I believe it's a Cuban station or two.

Was in Toronto in 1999 & 2000....rotating my radio on 1220 one way at night, a loud Cleveland....rotating 90 degrees, a loud CHSC. How the two ever co-existed at night is anybody's guess. I hear that CHSC is either gone, or going.

Supposed to end broadcasting, as August 31. Here I get 1220 CJUL Cornwall ON (weakly...unless I'm right on the St. Lawrence) during the day. The Cleveland station mucks things up at night, splattering onto 1215. :-\

Far northwest suburban Chicago....

Semi-local WKRS, Waukegan, during the day, but weak since I'm west of them and the juice is aimed north. WLPO audible in the background.

At night it's usually a mess, but WKNR rides in on top from time to time. I used to get CJRL (Kenora, ON) a few times, but they've been off the channel for quite some time.

Earlier this year, I spent quite a bit of time near Pensacola. XEB was top dog there....ranging from "fair" to "stud".

Back in the day, 1220 in Cleveland was the great WGAR, which I'd listen to at night from West Central Ohio. Had a null toward us but still strong. Days on 1220 was WERT Van Wert.

That's what I'm seeing also. The CRTC denied their application for renewal of the license in July due to a number of rule violations. So they'll have to go silent at the end of August, and they're not going to FM. (Source: Canadian Communications Foundation)

1220 is a huge jumble here in central Ohio, only 130 miles or so from Cleveland. I remember trying to tune in when WKNR had Indians games (a time when no Columbus station carried the Indians) and its own lack of a signal was more an issue than the splatter from local 1230 WCOL. Like gr8, I heard it better in western Ohio once WERT reduced power.
Additionally, during the day I remember it being a powerhouse in Massillon, Alliance, Canton, etc., but once you drove west on 30 toward Wooster the signal was drastically reduced and by Mansfield it was pretty much gone.

Ahhhh, WGAR, the home of Imus "the rock and roll dj", albeit for a brief period of time.

In SW OH during the day, it is WSLM in Salem IN, a station, I'm happy to say, that has changed little since I first heard it in the 1950's.

Nights, it is WHKW Cleveland, with a consistant but weak signal.

Way back when, I ID'd MX. No more.

Usually KDOW from Palo Alto CA even with splatter from KQEQ 1210 from Fowler CA.

CJUL is also going, going, gone. I dialed it up...almost by accident....on my Corus iPhone app this afternoon and got a loop saying they were going off. Weak signal given as one of the reasons. I think Canada is getting to the point....if not there already....where there are more silent AMs than active ones.

Your 1220 in Weatherford is in Azle. It's KZEE 1220.
