AM Frequency of the Week: 1220

East central Iowa: nothing daytime, unless KQMG Independence, IA is on (they've been silent for quite a while I believe).

Nighttime is usually a jumble with WLPO from Peru-LaSalle, IL on top. WHKW rarely makes it over here at night, remarkably.
 
From NW San Antonio:

Day: A bit of splatter from local 1200 WOAI.

Sunset: KMVL in Madisonville, TX, comes up first. XEB "La B Grande" in Mexico City and daytimer XESAL "Radio Universidad Agraria" in Saltillo eventually mix in, with KMVL usually dominating.

Night: Just XEB and KMVL. The former is most dominant as KMVL drops to night power, but I can often null it out fairly well by aiming NE/SW.

Sunrise: XESAL is back when it signs on for the day, and KMVL is stronger at day power. XESAL is usually the last to fade.

DX/Retro: One-time loggings include KOFO in Ottawa, KS, and KZEE in Weatherford, TX. Both back in January 2017 during sunsets a few days apart.

(But they still sound great in the southern suburbs of Milwaukee). The fact that you're hearing what's left of WLPO at your location is less surprising to me. :)

cyberdad looks you might have a point. I have not checked on them in a while and was basing my assessment on their signal from the past. Throughout the years they had a fair signal in my location. Nothing spectacular, but it was always there.

So, yesterday and today I tried to listen to them and their signal was very poor. It was there, but almost not listenable. On top of that WLPO would fade in and out and interfere with WKRS. I wonder if they have some technical issues at their transmitter site. If I remember right couple years ago they were off the air for a while due to flooding at their transmitter site. Perhaps that affected their signal quality.
 
Kenosha, WI Days- WKRS Waukegan, IL carrying TUDN Deportes, is about 18 miles to my south, and has its mighty 1000 watts aimed right at me. So, it has a local grade signal here. I believe however, as has been speculated here, that their signal has degraded over the past few years. I will also agree, as cyberdad stated, that they are pretty much done by Lake Cook Road going south.
Their 90 watt night power puts them in the mud.

Nights- WHKW is dominant, often coming up in critical hours, but seldom really clear while fighting WKRS. I also used to hear KLBB Stillwater,MN come up in critical hours; they turned in their license a few years ago. Also XEB a long time ago.

Indeed, WKRS is weaker here than it used to be. Still listenable (daytime). But not comfortably so. Until the mid-late 60s, WKRS a broadcast local news source for here in McHenry county despite their less than favorable pattern in our direction.

The now-defunct WMCW in Harvard IL, 500 watts at 1600, also dabbled in local news but didn't really have the resources to do an adequate job of it. Their studio and transmitter were located about 5 miles south of the Wisconsin state line. Their attempts to cover news from two adjacent Wisconsin counties didn't help matters. I'm curious if they made it to your location.

KLBB eventually made it up to 5kw (from 1kw IIRC). That gave them a decent signal over most of the Twin Cities during daytime, but still no match for the bigger signals in the market. KLBB (or at least the station with those call letters) actually did a better job of covering the market on 1400 with a stick located directly between Minneapolis and St. Paul. The call letters and the nostalgia format moved to suburban Stillwater more than 20 years ago.
 
1220 is a tough one for me in Springfield, OH, sandwiched between 1210 WDAO Dayton and 1230 WYTS Columbus, both locals within 50 miles.

Nights: WHKW Cleveland, have picked up in the day as well, but the only one heard at full night thus far.
Dawn/dusk: WSLM, Salem, IN (87w, 147 miles) and WLPO, LaSalle, IL (500w, 291 miles).
Days: nothing consistent, usually bleedover (what's the right term?) from 1210 and 1230.

I could receive WMCW at my location, but there used to be interference from WCGO Chicago Heights. They are both defunct now (WMCW in 2008 and WCGO in 2009. Here are pics of WKRS, WCGO and WMCW from my archives:

I remember this from family Disney trips circa lat 80s and early 90s. Automated oldies and a rather weak signal at the Disney hotels.

I visited Walt Disney World a couple of times, and remember 1220 from Kissimmee, FL as WMJK. In 1987, it was an Oldies station. When I returned in 1992, it was known as "Info Radio 1220," broadcasting Travelers and Visitors information.
