AM Frequency of the Week: 1250

What do you guys get on 1250?

In Bothell/Bellevue, WA I get KKDZ Seattle [IBOC  ] daytime and KKDZ night, along with KWSU Pullman (NPR) in the background.

In Yakima, and Portland, OR 1250 at night was mostly all KWSU. KKDZ did make appearances in Yakima, as did an UNID SS station (KLLK Willits, CA?) and an UNID country station (heard Three Wooden Crosses by Randy Travis, there's three different possibilities, UT, AZ and MT but all are less than 200w at night, so maybe one of them was on day power. It was weak) An ESPN was heard in Portland at times in KWSU's null, maybe San Antonio, TX (which is a real LONG shot).

Only this week or last, WSUA *1260* Miami had IBOC; now, no. 1250 & 1270 are open season again. :)

Before that, 1250 was WHNZ Tampa, and that was about it.

In Freeport Bahamas, one November afternoon in 1996, was hearing WTMA Charleston SC.

cd

A weak WARE (Ware Mass) from about 30 mi NW. Nice programming (oldies) but not really listenable here S of Worcester MA.

1250 from Lexington, KY:

Day/Night: Semi-Local WLRT, Nicholasville, KY

Night DX in null of WLRT: WDDZ, Pittsburgh, PA

Far northwest suburban Chicago

Day: WSSP, Milwaukee...weak

Night: Slop. In the '60s, it used to be Milwaukee (as WEMP), which would occasionally get overtaken by WREN (Topeka, KS).

Here it is our closest local, probably the strongest daytime signal around here, WTMA Charleston. They are a news/talk station. They get out, frequently listenable far down the Florida coast and up to Cape Hatteras daytime.

At night, all WTMA until you get about 30 miles from the station. Then, 1250 from Pittsburgh (whatever call letters they are this week) can mix in.

Day: static
Night: mess (Years ago I used to mainly hear KKDZ in Seattle, now I mostly hear KDDZ fighting with KWSU. KWSU sometimes tends to be the louder of the stations down here, but for the most part it's a mess. See also crainbebo's opening post.)

Northern VA, WKDL in nearby Warrenton, VA, simulcasting talker WTNT 730 "The Truth".
Sunset, I logged in WLEM Emporium, PA and night I get a bunch of stations on 1250, with Pittsburgh's Radio Disney often on top.

I'm in Haines City FL now (on vacation) and during the day I can get a fairly strong WHNZ out of Tampa on 1250 AM. They are part of the Clear Channel group in Tampa with daytime power at 25 kW, their format is news/talk, and slogan "Impact Radio".

My wife and I travel to Ocala via Haines City a few times a year. 90.3's Gospel programming is certainly unique! ( www.Gospel903.com ) There *was* an oldies pirate in HC a few months ago, but they mighta been caught (92.7).

1010 Tampa's pattern shoots right thru HC in the day, and if there's an NFL game, I listen :)

1250 is a mess in Bellingham, WA. KKDZ faintly comes in during the day but at night, it's a clash of KKDZ, KWSU and a few others.....

Found a great spot for AM DXing here in Vermilion and upon checking 1250, I heard a very weak WSSP/Milwaukee, WI (mention of Wilwaukee airport and then later an ID) mixing with another weak station, likely WGL/Fort Wayne, IN at about 2:15pm EST. Nighttime 1250 is a jumble although I did catch WARE/Ware, MA amongst the slop the other night around 8pm EST.

Night-time:
Over the years Kansas City (was Topeka) has been heard here on occasion. Much more so when it was in Topeka.
Mostly it's KKDZ and KWSU. Strange tho that KWSU doesn't have that good a signal into Boise for 5 kw!
Used to hear CKOM Saskatoon when they were on 1250.

At home in Rochester NY, it's all CJYE (ex-CHWO) Oakville ON by day; at night, it's a mix of CJYE and Pittsburgh. Here in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where I'm visiting the in-laws, it's local WGL.

I usually don't comment on a frequency of the week if it's a local but WHNZ's towers are only a couple miles away.

They share the same towers as WFLA and between both stations, one or the other can be heard a little bit across the entire AM band during the day in the form of the actual audio or slight splatter on empty frequencies or frequencies with a very weak signal.

I've been wondering if anyone here not in Florida has heard WHNZ from their location.

In Hobbs, Lubbock, or Midland, it's always 1250 KIKZ Seminole (TX), about 30 miles from Hobbs, 57 miles from Midland, and about 70 from Lubbock. Interesting station, especially when they're running Mennonite programming. I thought I was hearing a foreign nation when I heard that dirty German.

At night, however, only Mexican noise.
