AM Frequency of the Week: 1270

The old WKZT (the former and (then)-future WFUL) in Fulton, Kentucky, was on that frequency. It had 1000 watts, but could be heard from Dyersburg to Paducah. Sad to see that one go off the air (2012, I think). Fell victim to bad management, apparently. Someone should have saved it.

I worked there in the early '90s when it was WKZT. I would have stayed there longer, except that I didn't have a future there. I was only ever a weekender there.

Definitely a head scratcher, but I'm guessing from looking at the coverage maps on RL, that the idea is to cover as much of the Columbus metro as possible for as long as they can get away with it. The day pattern obviously wouldn't do that. You said earlie the pattern looks like a fish. To me it looks more like a dagger....or maybe some sort of long sword!. Very weird....along with the expense and upkeep of building six towers for a pea shooter that misses the metro. When I was getting a steady signal for a week or so several months back, they were probably running the day pattern. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to me back in the late winter or spring, the company that owns WDLR was shuffling formats and call letters around the various signals that they own. Perhaps that was part of it.

It has been within the past two years that the original WDLR, on 1550, turned into am AM outlet for Columbus' CD 92.9. That saga is another story in and of itself. When that change happened, the WDLR calls so associated with Delaware went 20 miles down the road to the station that's always been associated with Marysville. (Personally, that's why I feel so weird calling 1270 WDLR.)
I have spent maybe two hours outside the occasional Reds game listening to WDLR since the change, so they very well might have been on day pattern in that time. That company also has been known for playing fast and loose with allotted power and their patterns, especially over the past 10 years. I personally don't know why they don't just legally chuck that licensed day pattern they rarely if ever run anyway.

suburban Detroit, west burbs

was 5K DA-N until 2000 when the towers were moved south of Detroit, went to 50K different patterns day and night U4

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Nothing

Sunset: KFLC in Benbrook (Ft. Worth) dominates. Sometimes I'll hear a weak KRXO in Claremore, OK, underneath. Aiming E-W-ish I can null out KFLC somewhat and often hear KSCB in Liberal, KS. Occasionally a weak WIJD in Prichard, AL, will mix in.

Night: KFLC still dominates but is weaker and subject to fading. KSCB and XEGL "La Nuestra" in Navojoa can sometimes be heard weakly in the partial null.

Sunrise: Similar to sunset but with XEGL and KSCB (appearing later) stronger. No trace of WIJD, though.

DX: I've heard KINN in Almagordo, NM (sunrise), and KNWC in Sioux Falls, SD (sunset), once each.

Retro: Before KEPS in Eagle Pass went silent, I could hear it at sunrise; during the day I could hear it very weakly on my most sensitive radios. Also, I sometimes used to hear XERPL in LeĂłn at sunrise, but I haven't heard a trace of it lately.

P.S. It's good to be posting here with you guys again. I usually disappear during the height of FM e-skip season, but my return was delayed due to travel and illness. In July I went to the Philippines for two weeks. I got sick there, recovered, then got sick again when I returned. Shortly after that I started having problems with my left (non-dominant) arm - either a torn rotator cuff or pinched nerve - which is slowing me down. I'll post about my Philippines DX experiences soon.

Glad you're on the mend and back with us. I for one, always enjoy your posts. Stay well and keep 'em coming!

Good to have you back, sorry to hear about your illness/shoulder issues. I had a "frozen shoulder" about 7 years ago, not fun. Here's hoping you're recovered soon.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your Philippines DX. When I lived in Australia, some of my favorite receptions were the Philippine stations with their frantic delivery and sound effects. A bit reminiscent of the fast paced US top 40 stations in the 60's/70's.

Thanks, cyberdad and wildthangjim.

Sorry to hear about your frozen shoulder, wildthangjim. I hope it's completely healed. I'm in physical therapy for my arm/shoulder issue. Both my doctor and the PT doctor want to me get an MRI to determine exactly what is going on (x-rays didn't reveal anything significant). Unfortunately my insurance company just denied authorization for the MRI. I'll be contacting my doctor on Monday to see what can be done to reverse the denial.

I'll post about the Philippines DX some time this week. The experience was different than I expected in some ways.

Amazing, about a year ago it was decided to increase the height of the radios, also the terrain where it is broadcasting is a good conductor.
