AM Frequency of the Week: 1290

Somebody's gotta re-launch this. Just as well me as the next guy, so here goes.... 1290. No particular reason. I don't remember all the channels we've already covered....other than it was most, if not all, of them. So with apologies if we've been here before, here we go again....

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago (feels good to be typing that again).

Days: A very weak WZTI from Milwaukee. 5kw with a major lobe to the north, smaller lobe south. Basically all the signal along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Not much aimed in my direction (southwest).

Night: WIRL (Peoria) rules. In this case the 5kw is aimed right at me (almost). The Omaha 1290 occasionally butts in. WHIO (Dayton) intrudes less frequently.

(During my college days in southeast Iowa in the late '60s, WIRL was a regular daytime listen for me with a well-executed top 40 format. At night, they disappeared when they nulled in the direction of Omaha).

1290 day - KUMA Pendleton OR (News/Talk)
Sunset - KOUU Pocatello, ID, KUMA, KGVO Missoula MT
Nights - KUMA, KGVO, KPAY Chico CA, CFRW Winnipeg MB, rarely can hear KOWB Laramie WY in the Coast to Coast mess.

Here in Columbus, Ohio, all WHIO during the day. It's solid but weak on my side of town, maybe 4 on a 1-to-10 scale, and considerably stronger just 25 miles west of me on the other side of the metro.
WHIO completely disappears at night, and I have never heard much of anything in its place.
In my mother's hometown of St. Marys, Ohio, 60 miles north of Dayton, it's a decently strong WHIO day and night since the nighttime lobe points pretty much straight at them.

Traveling today from Madison, WI to Louisville KY. I had WIRL alone and steady along I-39 and I-74 from Mendota, IL to Crawfordsville, IN (30 miles east of Illinois state line)....about 160 miles total. 10am-12:30pm CST. Toyota Camry rental car with a really good radio.
