AM Frequency of the Week - 1330 kHz

What can you all get on 1330 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it's mostly WOBL(1320) splatter. When I can get around that it's a very weal mix of WINT/Willoughby, OH (formerly WELW) with a talk format and WFIN/Findlay, OH also with a talk format. Nights is a graveyard-like mess with nothing ever dominating and less WOBL splatter.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago...

Days: It's a battle between 1kw WNTA, Rockford, IL (Talk) and 5kw WKTA, Evanston, IL (Ethnic). These stations protect each other (sort of), but I'm right in the "combat zone"...about 30-35 miles from each. WKTA throws most of its signal over Lake Michigan. Although their towers are close enough to radioman to probably pump in enough RF to power his entire house! :)

Nights: One of the "messiest" channels around here. The former KFH from Wichita used to be the most likely to be on top, but that's ancient history.

Right on Cyberdad--WKTA is about the strongest signal in the daytime for me. I never hear WNTA unless I get up near your area.
At night it's mostly a mess here as well. I can hear WKTA, but it might as well be DX.

Many years ago the old WJJD was the strongest signal here during the day. They would actually overload my hi fi back in the day.

In Gary Indiana, I get a faint signal from WKTA Evanston, IL (towers & studio are in Northbroook). At night, all I get is splatter from different 1330's out there. I remember at night when I used to work in the northern suburbs of Chicago, I remember driving by the tower site , I could only hear the station clearly for maybe 5 - 10 blocks, before it would get splattered. This was when they were only 17 watts at night non-directional. Now it's 110 watts at night on 6 towers (2 extra towers were added when Polnet had to diplex 1430 WEEF Deerfield, IL (used to be Highland Park, IL) from the WKTA site, due to losing their original tower site for WEEF.

Located in W. Washington.

Nights it's almost always a mix of KKPZ Portland (religious) and CJYM Rosetown, Saskatchewan (good mix of classic hits).

There have been times I've listened to a prayin' preacher on KKPZ (that's all he does) with CJYM's Can-Con mix playing in the background.

Other stations occasionally heard on 1330 have been KJPR (ex-KCLM) Redding, Calif., KMBI Spokane (religious, signs on in morning), and KOVE Lander, Wyo., only heard once or twice.

Pickerington, Ohio (east suburb of Columbus): Nothing, except very weak splatter from WLOH (1320) out of Lancaster, and even then you have to be farther southeast from me to get real discernible splatter.
Up in the northern reaches of the metro, you might be able to pick up WFIN. I have never tried but will on my next trip north, if it's during the day.
Nighttime, all jumble.

It's been a while, and my memory is a little fuzzy, so don't hold me to this.... BUT, I seem to remember WFIN becoming audible going westbound a not too far beyond the Turnpike/480 split. Of course on the other end of the metro you had the old WELW. Not much of a signal, but you never knew what you were going to hear next! I always looked forward to WELW's "fifteen minutes of fame" when I was heading east out of town towards Erie and Buffalo.

In Cedar Rapids, IA, daytime it's a faint-to-fair KWLO Waterloo during the days. A mere 50 miles away, it has a null in the direction of my town, but sends a better signal south and west. Nighttimes, usually also KWLO, but not particularly listenable, and 1330 overall is a mess at night. I have heard KNSS (former KFH) from Wichita in recent times. I don't think I've ever heard WLOL Minneapolis, which sends most of its signal northward day and night.

Springfield, IL:

Daytime--A weak but listenable signal from WRAM Monmouth, IL (which also sends a better signal south as it's nulled to protect KWLO and WNTA Rockford, IL)
Dusk--Mix of at least WRAM and likely WNTA (maybe also other signals in that mess)
Night--usually slop

I always used to be able to hear WTRX on 1330 in the daytime. When they were off in the early 1990s, you could hear WFIN. Toward dusk, you would hear WEAW/WKTA. At night, there was little that was listenable with WTRX off the air. Even though the NIF is in the 5.8 mV/m range, it was Class III-A under the old rules and had few strong interfering signals, except WFBC/WYRD Greenville, SC. But now WEXL 1340 has IBOC and it is really difficult to hear in the daytime. Strange thing that 50000 watt IBOC stations are off half the time, but WEXL almost always has it on.

1330 days is usually nothing, maybe a very weak KKPZ or KMBI.
Sunsets it's usually KMBI Spokane, KKPZ Portland, KGRG Enumclaw and/or CJYM Rosetown, SK.
Nights is usually a mix of KKPZ and CJYM with some KWKW Los Angeles or KLBS Los Banos on auroral evenings. Rarely, KOVE Lander, WY will pop in with country mx.
KKPZ *used* to sign off after midnight leaving CJYM and usually KWKW on the frequency. A Coast to Coast AM station has been noted in the sign off period in the CJYM null, likely was KNSS Wichita. I have also noted a 2nd oldies station at times when KKPZ is off, and in the CJYM null - likely was Juneau AK (needed).
I also heard KCKM Monahans, TX when they had their non-directional DX test back in March. Went across the country and also was heard in Sweden!

That's probably true in Cleveland, but I am in Columbus. :) In any case, I have forgotten to check WFIN on my recent trips north. I will this coming week.
