AM Frequency of the Week: 1330

40 Miles NW of downtown Chicago.....

Daytime. WKTA (Evanston, IL ) vs. WNTA (Rockford, ILI Both weak. WNTA gets the better of it. But not by much.

Night: m 1330 much discussed a few months back. Bottom line: WPTY (Waterloo, IA) most likely to rise to the top. But most night's its a mess. No identifiable trace pf CJYM despite repeated trying.
 
East Tennessee: Splatter from WKGN-1340. WAEW, Crossville TN and WKDP, Corbin, KY remain my closest unheards because of that.
Retro/other: Western Ohio-At my home location (Celina area) it was WFIN, Findlay often with WTRE, Greensburg IN (named for the tree growing in the courthouse tower. Sunset brought what was then WEAW, Evanston, In and most dominant nighttime signal was (the former) WFBC, Greenville SC.
 
Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WKTA (ex WSSY, WEAW, WPRZ) with good signal
Nightime: WKTA is usually there in the mix with other stations

DX/RETRO: Others logged on this frequency WNTA (Rockford, IL), KFH (Wichita, KS), KWLO (Waterloo, IA), WMOR (Moorehead, KY), WHOT (Campbell, OH), WFBC (Greenville, NC), WHBL (Sheboygan, WI), WTRX (Flint, MI), WBGW (Evansville, IN). Nothing new heard on this frequency in many years.
 
DFW, Texas

Daytime: Weak KSWA Graham, TX with Classic Country.
Sunset: Winter late afternoons, WEBY Milton, FL often comes in with Sports prior to power change.
Nights: KNSS Wichita, KS is loudest with news/talk. Nulling KNSS, I can hear KCKM from Monahans (West Texas) with Country music.
One-time over night catches: KVOL Lafayette, LA with Oldies and KPTY Waterloo, IA with Classic Country.
 
In west Houston, daytimes are mostly local 1320 KXYZ slop, but have heard KTON Fox Sports from Belton TX once or twice in the winter. At sunset, KNSS Wichita KS is often on top, with KTON and KVOL (oldies, formerly "The Rewind", now "MeTV FM") usually in there. At night, it's those, plus KCKM Monahans TX with country. I was thinking I've heard WEBY at sunset here, but don't have it in the logbook.
 
From the southwest suburbs of Chicago: Days, it's a decent signal from WKTA Evanston/Northbrook, with its towers next to the Tri-State Tollway.

Nights, it's a zoo. It's effectively a graveyard channel. Over the years, I've heard KWWL Waterloo, Iowa, KFH Wichita, Kan., WFBC Greenville, N.C. and most recently (7/6/2020) WBGW Evansville, Ind. But right now, there's a hint of country music rising over a mush of signals. Maybe that's KWWL/KWLO/KPTY, or maybe not.
 
When I lived cattycorner in town here, 1330 daytimes here in NE PA had been a real 'shrug' frequency for a while , often marked by a mild WASA* in Havre Dis Grace MD.
SSS's are when 1330 came alive in more recent times, but even then could be crooked occasions for the log book of 'counteds'.
WFBC from SC, WEBO from NY and WWRV from NYC made lucid-enough sense to add them. Yet a taped 1994 SSS catch I have here as WADJ Coopersville-Somerset remains a real unID ghost.

*WASA could be a quite regular SSS catch back in Queens NYC despite 1330 NYC having two 5000-watt time-share local stations licensed to it. When it was time for the farther-off WPOW's site to broadcast, they were very weak compared with WEVD. As the worst of the four DXers in our clique I still heard 18 stations on 1330 back then -- with the unlikely AN catch of KWWL Waterloo Iowa being # 1000.
 
I had heard years ago about the two 1330s in New York City being weak in some places, making it possible to DX frequently.

Dave Gale was the Chief Engineer at WTRX 1330 in the 1970s, and he told me that his most common DX reports were from The City of New York. That surprised me before I knew about the two sites and sign off gaps for WEVD and WPOW. WTRX also did nondirectional DX tests sometimes on Sunday and Monday mornings. I remember they had "Love You Inside Out" and "Sooner Or Later" and others on the DX tape, and musical jingles in between songs.
 
Where our group of four DXed in Queens NYC near JFK Airport was nearly right on the demilitarized zone between water path DX from Atlantic City / DelMarVa and the inland DX stuff. At times, graveyarder WMID 1340 used to splash over onto WPOW 1330.
WPOW had three sticks in southwestern Staten Island. WEVD's towers were in Maspeth, Queens, and made for a searing local signal at us.
@ Shroed: Your buddy CE Dave Gale at WTRX must have some interesting recalls from those days of NYC's 1330 time-sharers WEVD (ethnic-political) and WPOW (religious).. WTRX was up the Hudson in Troy NY, wasn't it ?

WTRY 980 was in Troy, NY, as I recall. WHAZ 1330 is in Troy, NY. WTRX 1330 is in Flint, Michigan.

Day: Lots of splatter from local 1350 KXTN.

Sunset: KTON comes up through the splatter first, followed by KNSS. A little later when aiming NW/SE, I can hear a weak KINE, Spanish-language Christian talk/music in Kingsville, TX, and eventually KCKM.

Night: KCKM is fairly strong with occasional fades. At rare times, KINE can be heard briefly underneath. KCKM can be nulled pretty well when I aim NE. KNSS is strongest there and KTON is rarely heard. KVOL in Lafayette mixes in occasionally with oldies

Sunrise: WEBY often has a surprisingly decent signal here for a while when it goes to day power, dominating KTON and KNSS. KTON takes over when it goes to day power. To the NW/SE, KCKM is weaker, and KINE mixes in at day powerup. Once KCKM goes back to 12 kW, it's strong and solid and lasts well beyond sunrise.

DX: I logged urban gospel station KGLD in Tyler, TX, once several years ago on a December night. Occasionally at night I used to hear XEAJ in Saltillo and XEWQ in Monclova before they were retired.

I've tried to hear KGLD in Tyler, TX, since I restarted DX again 1 year ago. It should be well within my daytime range here in DFW, but no trace. I wonder if this station is still broadcasting?

KGLD still has an active website and audio stream. It’s listed as transmitting at 1 kW ND day and 77 watts at night. Maybe it’s been on reduced power for a while?
