AM Frequency of the Week: 1360

Crystal Lake, Illinois......

Days: 1360 is semi-local WLBK from DeKalb, IL. 1kw non directional from about 30 miles to my southwest. The result here is a fair-good signal.

Nights: WLBK drops to 24 watts (supposedly), but still stays on top.. This past week, I've been nulling it to see if I can determine what's underneath, but haven't been able to ID anything from the multiple signals present. Previously I've most commonly heard WSAI (Cincinnati) and WTAQ (Green Bay).

Retro: A few years back, I was one of many of us hearing the 1360 from Mobile, AL running 9kw day power aimed mostly north. IIRC they were using the WMOB call letters that have bounced from one station to another down there for quite some time. Whatever.....the 1360 version is now silent. Tomservo, who lives in that general area, is reading this, perhaps he can share a few more details if he knows them.

From west Houston:

Days - local KWWJ with gospel music
Sunset - KWWJ is mostly gone after their power/pattern change. KMNY from the DFW area with Spanish talk, sometimes KNIR New Iberia LA with Radio Maria religion, and KKTX Corpus Christi, TX with news/talk are regulars.
Night - Mostly KKTX but the others listed above also pop up from time to time.

Retro, from Tulsa in the early '70's, Amarillo's KRAY was usually there with Top40 but WSAI was usually hearable at night and almost in the clear on Monday mornings. It always surprised me how strong they were, but I see now from the coverage pattern map that they have a lobe aimed directly at Tulsa.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

My logbook is so old I have WLBK DeKalb, Ill., listed as a 1 kW daytimer, with UPI Audio news at the top of the hour. I'm twice as far from DeKalb as cyberdad so it fades into the stew at night. Listening to 1360 late at night the last few nights, things bubble up but no IDs.

Previous 1360 hits here include: WBAY Green Bay (not heard as WTAQ), WSAI Cincinnati (most recently 7/29/2020), WMOB Mobile, Ala. with the famous 9kW day power all night, WIBK Watseka, Ill. (1 kW, by nulling WLBK during the day), WKMI Kalamazoo (sunset skip), WNJC Washington Township, N.J. on a 9/12/2020 DX test, and most recently KSCJ Sioux City, Iowa on a 2020 November evening.

East Tennessee: Daytime is WBLC, Lenoir City, TN which relays the 7th Day Adventist "Life Talk" radio
Night: I spot-checked one recent Friday night and caught WSAI loud with high school football, with another unidentified station also carrying high school football.
Retro/other: I don't think I heard it here (but probably could have) WMOB, Mobile AL while it was running high power at night, but it was a regular on the Edinburgh IN SDR. WSAI has a nice lobe toward Dayton and Springfield at night, and had some listenership in their top 40 days.

Lafayette, IN area....The former WGFA (WIKI), Watseka IL days. Nights were a hodgepodge including WSAI (at the announcing its pending move to 1530 with the adult standards format.

From Pickerington, Ohio, 1360 is a very weak WSAI if anything by day and nothing at night.
I've tried for WWOW, from my wife's hometown of Conneaut, Ohio, but never heard it. They put out 5,000 watts daytime across a decent swath of northeast Ohio but drop to 35 watts at night. Even then, they have a solid signal five miles out at my in-laws. No idea how much farther they get out than that after dark.

WWOW puts a good signal into southwest Ontario across Lake Erie from Conneaut. Comfortably listenable for about a 50-mile stretch of the 401 freeway (which connects Toronto and Detroit).

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WLBK with fair signal
Nightime: WSAI or WTAQ

DX/RETRO: DX wise this is a quite productive frequency for me with over 20 stations heard including 3 from Texas (KBUK, KRYS, KAHZ). Other notable logs include KHNC (Johnstown, CO), KSCJ (Sioux City, IA), WKMI (Kalamazoo, MI), WIBK (Watseka, IL), WWBZ (Vineland, NJ), WMOB (Mobile, AL) and few others (WXKY, WISV, WIXZ, WIYN, WWOW, WNJC). One foreign log is HJTU Cartagena, Colombia. Recently got a couple stations with Friday Night Football games: WFLW (Monticello,KY) about a month ago and WMOV Ravenswood, WV just this past Friday. WFLW was a new catch, while WMOV was last heard in 1985.

Northeastern Ohio signals are tough to get in western Ohio, but I seem to have a pipeline on winter days near sunset for northeast Ohio stations in the upper part of the band. Maybe I'll see if I can get past my semi-local to get WWOW

The Olde Log Booke hasn't changed much since the last 1360 hand-stamp, except for the WNJC NJ DX test. That log was off the car radio en route to the mini-mart for emergency, uh, chocolate donuts.
Days still is the local WPPA Pottsville, 5000, directional sort of east west but the loudest AMer here. Night they drop to 500 watts and use three of their 5 unlit sticks to pull it all in toward both Hartford and Cincinnati and send about 490 of those watts south. I used to live in their wicked west null, and naturally, both WDRC and WSAI came in, lol.
One late afternoon WASA from Havre DisGrace MD came in, // with their 1330 main signal (a faint daytime regular).
One March 2013 night I was one of the many who caught the widely-logged WMOB Mobile Alabama.

* Anyone here be able to help me out with the date again for that WNJC test? I don't have that. IIrc, they tested on two nights, too.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Heavy slop from local 1350 KXTN.

The 1350 slop is worse than what it used to but not quite as bad as it is now on 1340. Once again, off-tuning/filtering definitely helps.

Sunset: KMNY in Hurst (near DFW) is heard amidst the slop when aiming NE. Also, gospel KWWJ in Baytown comes up from the SE with a weak to moderate signal.

Night: KWWJ and KKTX in Corpus Christi are still there but weaker. KNIR in New Iberia, LA, pops up sporadically, and KACT in Andrews (west Texas) occasionally comes up briefly.

Sunrise: KWWJ is stronger and dominates when it goes to day power. KKTX still mixes in, and KNIR can sometimes be heard underneath. Later, KMNY comes up strong when it goes back to 50 kW day power.

DX/Retro: One-time catches include KHNC in Johnstown, CO; KPHN in El Dorado, KS; KBUY in Ruidoso, NM; KTNZ in Amarillo, TX; and the currently silent WMOB in Mobile.

KIKMO 1360 Tacoma, WA about 1600 miles away.. quite regular and sometimes, very well at night

South Mississippi:

Day: WFFF Columbia, MS "Real Country"
Sunrise/Sunset: WIXI Jasper, AL (rhythmic oldies, blues)
Night: KNIR New Iberia, LA (Radio Maria) has a strong signal
I haven't heard WMOB Mobile as they use a directional antenna that points mostly north.

Driving up to Conneaut Saturday ahead of some expected Christmas snow, I tuned to 1360 right around Geneva, Ohio on I-90 to see what I could hear. Whatever station was on top of the frequency was carrying the Compass broadcast of the Eagles-Cowboys game, so I assumed it was WSAI without hearing an ID.
Almost to the Conneaut city limits, the sports broadcast still was dominating the channel but with some interference. I couldn't stick around long enough to see if it was in fact WWOW, but the only sports I've ever known the latter to carry are Conneaut High School football and basketball and the Columbus Blue Jackets. I'd have been very surprised if they were carrying a random football game at that hour on Christmas Eve.
