AM Frequency of the week: 1420:

Not open for further replies.
40 mi northwest of downtown Chicago....

Days: Usually blank. Sometimes in winter WOC from Davenport, Iowa is in. Presumably daytime skywave from their daytime pattern, which is favorable in my direction. 1420 is also home to WIMS from Michigan City, IN, which is heard in much of the Chicago area. WIMS 'is also 5kw, but I'm in their null, so: I've never heard them here,

Night: A jumble. WOC sometimes on top, but not usually. KTOE from Mankato, MN has been in a handful of times, but that's rare,

Other locations: IME, KTOE usually blasts into the Wisconsin and Minnesota northwoods at night

East Tennessee: 1420 has been a challenge. Daytime can be a weak signal from WEMB, Erwin, TN in the extreme northeastern part of the state. I had WRCG, Columbus, GA at sunset this week. Otherwise, an unidentified mess.

Retro/other: There weren't a lot of 1420s in my home areas in Ohio and Indiana, with several 1410s and 1430s around. On the Edinburgh IN SDR I pulled WOC with Iowa Hawkeye football on Thanksgiving Day.

KITI is the dominant 1420 from Chehalis, WA here 1700 miles away or so at night.

KKEA Honolulu is the common one in the morning
KSTN Stockton, Ca is also possible, but not common

KSTN is a repeat.. I mean, it was a regular visitor in Laramie Wyoming.. I heard 1420 KSTN regularly in Laramie and I even heard the 105.9 KSTN translator in wyoming once.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago, 1420 means WIMS Michigan City, Ind., days, and a jumble at night. I haven't IDed anything new since the days I used a 10-band Radio Shack portable as my main DX unit.

Those old logs: WOC Davenport, Iowa (a charter NBC Red affiliate); WHK Cleveland; KPOC Pocahontas, Ark.; CKPT Peterborough, Ont.; and WVJS Owensboro, Ky. For all I know, one or two of those or other stations bubbled up over the hash as I was monitoring before hitting the sack the last few nights, but no IDs.

Daytime from Rochester NY: semi-local WACK Newark, 30 miles east. At night it's a mushy mess that's as often Cleveland as anything else.

If anything here in suburban Columbus, Ohio, it's WHK from Cleveland. If so, it's very weak and only at night. I don't think I've ever heard it here daytime.
It's between WING on 1410 and Newark's WCLT on 1430, but neither of those are strong enough at my location to hamper anything on 1420.

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: weak WIMS in Michigan City, IN
Nighttime: my old place, WOC was the most likely. In my new place, directly facing Lake Michigan, I've heard WHK Cleveland. On other occasions I've heard WCED in Dubois, PA and KTOE in Mankato, MN.

From the west side of Houston:

Daytime: nothing but slop from local KSHJ 1430
Sunset and night: XEEW (W-1420" talk in Spanish) Matamoros, XEH ("Antologia Vallenata") Monterrey, and KGNB (classic country) New Braunfels TX show up, with XEH often dominating. I've also heard KPEL (sports "The Goat") Lafayette, LA. At night it's a jumble.
Morning: XEEW is strongest. I have also heard KWBF Lubbock TX (contemporary Christian).

From northside of DFW, Texas:

Daytime: Nothing audible. I *should* be able to easily hear KFYN Bonham, TX at 65 miles NE, however, I've never heard them. Perhaps the AM is not broadcasting.

Sunset/Nights: No strong signals, most of the time I hear KBHS Hot Springs, AR in with regional Mexican (not likely on 87w night power). KBTN Neosho, MO (Fox Sports), WOC Davenport, IA (Newstalk 1420), and XEEW Matamoros all surface from time to time. I've also heard KTOE Mankato, MN (Information Radio KTOE) and KPEL Lafayette, LA (ESPN) each once.

Sunrise: Usually hear KGNB New Braunfels, TX with TSN News.

Tried, but unheard day or night is KPIR Granbury, TX at 57 miles SW.

Those old logs: WOC Davenport, Iowa (a charter NBC Red affiliate);
Yep...;and loyal. They remained with NBC for a half century. WOC-TV (ch 6) was also NBC, and atill is as KWQC-TV,

I interviewed at WOC in the early70s, but wound up with their chief radio-TV competitor, (WHBF radio and TV (CBS). Still. I wound up with several friends at WOC.

Wilmington Delaware

WCOJ Coatesville PA with Catholic programming. Comes in well during the day but gets run over at night by other stations none of which I have identified. For decades WCOJ was known as the Voice of Chester County with local news, school closings, local talk and music. It was a shock when the station was sold and I still can't get used to hearing the Holy Rosary on 1420.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WIMS Michigan City, IN
Nighttime: open frequency with WOC frequently heard

DX/RETRO: others heard include KTOE (Mankato, MN), WKPR (Kalamazoo, MI), WHK (Cleveland, OH), WVJS (Owensboro, KY), WRCG (Columbus, GA), WFLT (Flint, MI), WHBN (Harrodsburg, KY), and XEEW (Matamoros, Mexico)

Much as it's Anwar's daytime regular, so is WCOJ here.
We're about 1/4 inch north of Pottsville, upper left quadrant.
At night, WCOJ is inedible. But back in its 'day' I was DJing in Philly and would see WCOJ show up with numbers like 0.5 in the Philly book.-- quite a feat for what is effectively a daytimer nearly 40 miles west of Center City.
Suns have set on WKCW Va (taped ID), WCED Pa and WACK in Herkimer NY.
Nights here is basically WHK, also taped for reasons I'm certain were useful at the time.

In Gloucester County, Virginia, WXGM plays oldies. I think they were affiliated with either Tom Kent or Scott Shannon at one point. It was a day timer at first, but now broadcasts 24/7. The signal isn't that strong, but they do have a translator. According to the station's history, it was long-ago owned by a Mr. Arthur Lazarow who had been an announcer at WWJ in Detroit. Does that name ring a bell to anyone?

Daytime usually a weak WOC Davenport. I’m only about 65 miles away, but its fairly directional pattern favors other directions than me. Nighttime too is more often KTOE Mankato, MN, but sometimes WOC is there. I should spend more time on 1420 and see what shows up.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Classic country from semi-local KGNB in New Braunfels.

Sunset: Aiming N/S, I can usually get a good null of KGNB. In it, XEEW in Matamoros often has a fairly good signal and sometimes XEH in Monterrey mixes in. Now and then I'll hear a weak KBHS in Hot Springs, AR.

Night: When aiming E/W, KGNB is mostly weak and sometimes fades out briefly. XEH and KPEL in Lafayette, LA, will occasionally pop up. To the N/S, it's like a graveyard frequency. Heard most often are XEH and KWBF "Walk By Faith Radio" in Lubbock with Christian pop. Occasionally KBHS, KBTN "Fox Sports" in Neosho, MO, and KTJS in Hobart, OK, will pop up. Rare visitors include XEEW and KPIR in Granbury, TX.

Sunrise: KGNB is stronger again at day power, and the null is no longer very effective. XEH and KWBF mix in or are underneath.

DX/Retro: One-time catches include classic hits KULY in Ulysses, KS, and XEF in Ciudad Juárez.
