AM Frequency of the week: 1440:

WKPR spent a lot of money moving to 1440 with 4000 watts nondirectional Day and 24 watts nondirectional Night a few years . I know someone who might know what's going on. They don't currently have a translator, but there may be a way to do it soon.

WROK was always 500 watts Nondirectional Night until recently. With their sectionalized tower, they are probably the same inverse field equivalent with 270 watts as they were with 500 watts. They must have moved or relicensed in some way.

WBCM...WMAX 1440 Bay City was 1000/500 watts nondirectional Night until the late 1970s, when they went to 5000/2500 DA-2, with shallow nulls close to the 500 watt nondirectional inverse field. They were one of the first stations on 1410/1440, and have a relatively low NIF. They were a Class III-B.

If they FCC ever allows station status to AM translators, a lot of the AMs will sadly probably shut down.

Some of the Canadian translators are considered Class A1 stations, with a 250 watt/100 meter HAAT equivalent limit. Some of the translators at high HAAT in the US have 60 dBu contours equivalent to some of the old 3000 watt Class As with AM tower antenna mounting low HAAT. The high HAAT 250 watt translators present Longley Rice predicted interference problems to full power stations in neighboring markets, because of shadow areas in the signal with their low HAAT.

1440 would likely be WGEM Quincy, if it was on the air in my area.

Does anyone recall KHOG Fayetteville, AR?--they were a daytimer Top-40 back in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1983, the station moved to 1030 AM, and eventually became KFAY.

I got a very weak signal of a station on 1440 last night. All I could make out was something about the Black Information Network and missed the TOTH ID. There are only two BIN stations on 1440: one in South Carolina and one in California. Given the fact that I am in Central North Carolina, I'm certain that I picked up WGVL Greenville, SC. It's a new station for me.

I remember KHOG from trips to Tahlequah and Lake Tenkiller Oklahoma when I was a kid. Just a small turn from KELI 1430 to keep the music going. At home in Tulsa KELI slop prevented hearing them. I didn’t know they became KFAY (which I’ve heard from Houston).

Western Detroit, MI suburbs:

Days--
Local WMKM. This is a 1kw DA-2 licensed to Inkster, MI, and would be a good candidate for "Closest station with the worst signal" award. Their transmitter is roughly 9 miles south of me, and they put in only a fair signal at best here. Although to be fair most of their signal is sent NE into Detroit, day and night.

Nights-- Kind of a mess. However several other stations have been logged over the years:
WIBU Paris, IL
WMAX Bay City, MI
WKPR Kalamazoo, MI

South Mississippi:

Day: WVGG Lucedale, MS - simulcasts WRBE 106.9 "The Best in Country"
Night: WLWI Montgomery, AL - News Radio 1440
WWCL Lehigh Acres/Fort Myers, FL - Radio Visión Cristiana
sometimes WZYX Cowan, TN - The Eagle (adult hits)

So far, amid the meagre, unimpressive and standard-issue1440 catches here evolved one goodie -- a Long Island alma mater.
Dates unknown, but from around 2005 or so: After their split from WBAB-FM, former daytimer WNYG 1440 had become a clubhouse. One night a pal of mine, the CE, was running tests. Instead of the 42 or so watts, he was on their 1000 watt omni signal, asking if I could hear 'em.
Nope. He then cranked it to its limit -- 1500 watts or so. No dice. Over the phone he said, 'Hang on. Lemme find some James Brown.' Still nothing. I was getting the notorious non-QSLer from Youngstown atop a few others.
Only about a month later, another buddy from back then was hosting some sort of equipment test / beer party at the place. He was a bit more 'by-the-book', though.
Like, 1458 watts more by-the-book.
Of course, that overnight session I was able to ID something like three oldies in a row they were playing!
(Barefoot GE SR 2 at those times)

50KW JOWF 1440 Sapporo, Japan is incredibly common before sunrise in the mornings. Like so common, its there pretty much every day at some level

At night, I've only heard KMED Medford, OR once or twice CJKR W1440 Wetaskawin, AB 3 or 4 times.

i;ve caught CKJR on a couple of the Alberta SDRs. Nice nix of oldies.

Side note.. none of the DJ's, of which there are two... on W1440, are live or local. The morning guy is in the canadian maritimes and the afternoon gal is in Camrose/Edmonton.

The last time I tuned in to W1440, it was a female jock. Early afternoon. This would have beem at least 6 months ago. St. Paul (Alberta) SDR. IIRC.

Stella Stevens i believe.. shes at CFCW 840 in Camrose/Edmonton

I'm near Seattle, and on 1440 I usually hear KMED Medford OR mixing with KODL The Dalles. I've heard CKJR maybe twice, total, and that was over 7-8 years ago.

Now it looks like 1440 will be wall-to-wall KODL The Dalles because in 6 days KMED is going off the air. They're going to be FM only.

Well, so far, KMED is still appears to be on the air. At least one day after they were supposed to yank the plug out of the wall and take a hammer to the transmitter.

CKJR was in earlier, with brokered programming (some spots in Hindustani or Punjabi), and "Universal Radio". Then KMED faded up after a while. I think the oldies kick in on CKJR during different time periods.

As I write this, I'm hearing KMED with talk (Coast To Coast AM with Dr. Sky) and what sounds like Classic Hits or oldies behind it (on my PR-D5).

As of this evening, KMED Medford is still on the air, with CKJR's oldies dominating. C2C on KMED, which had a KCMD and KMED-FM ID at the TOH.
