Long time ago, my first-ever paid vacation wound up in Clearwater. A gal I knew and a radio pal -- they never met -- had moved to there. My DJ pal worked at the local WCWR 1470 Dunedin, a fake-Drake daytimer. One day WCWR did their sign-off, and in blasted your WRBD 1470 (Rockin' Big Daddy') for a few moments before their sign-off.

Music 'Til Dawn was not only sponsored by American Airlines, the idea was dreamed up by the boss, C.R. Smith, who worked late into the night in D-FW and couldn't find anything he liked on the radio. He called old pal Frank Stanton of CBS and the idea came into being, with clear-channel stations covering the nation, plus a station in Oklahoma covering Tulsa, its maintenance headquarters. MTD only ended when CBS took its all-news stations all-news overnight. American looked for another partner but the 17-year run was over.
