AM Frequency of the Week: 1530

@ CADXER :

That Lapeer Michigan station you mentioned used to put in quite the sunset signal to us near JFK Airport back around the late Sixties.

Back then, they were WTHM, as being from 'The Thumb' part of Michigan. The NF8M coverage map page indeed still has them listed as 5000 W, D-3. They send a nice lobe toward us. Thankx for the retro memory!

And yet, during CH, WCKY often made it impossible to hear WTHM Lapeer more than 10 miles or so, to the point that they signed off early after WTHM-FM signed on as a simulcast.

I've heard that one a few times at my location around sunrise. I forgot to mention it in my OP sorry. I've driven through Lapeer a few times. It would definitely appear to be in the sweet spot for WCKY during CH...and any other time during hours of darkness.

Sunset: KGBT in Harlingen comes up fairly strong. KVDW in England, AR, can often be heard underneath or mixing in. XEUR "Éxtasis Digital" in Mexico City and KNZX are sometimes there underneath as well but weaker.

Night: The KEDA splatter is gone, and KGBT dominates. XEUR is still underneath but stronger. KZNX is only heard rarely.

Sunrise: Similar to sunset. KGBT hangs around for a good while after sunrise before just KZNX remains.

.....

Also, KGBT seems stronger these days, so I wonder if something changed slightly in one or both of their directional patterns that would account for it.

Here in Houston, back in November 2019 when the above was written, KGBT dominated the frequency at night. Now, I can't hear a trace of them at night, with WCKY and XEUR dominant. Has anyone else noticed this? Their night pattern should not be sending much power my way. I wonder if they were having issues before that have now been resolved?

It sounds like they were not running on their normal directional pattern at night or maybe using higher power when you heard them in November. They do send most of their night signal away from Houston.

Thanks for the update, Jim. I’ve been listening to 1530 tonight, and it’s more like I used to remember it with KGBT only occasionally popping up. With it no longer dominating, I’m sometimes hearing XESD mix in, which I thought had retired but is still there with new branding - La Lupe - and now playing regional Mexican music.
