AM Frequency of the Week: 1530F

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Usually nothing, sometime very weak SS probably KZNX from the Austin area.

Sunset: KZNX with SS music mixing with strong WCKY.

Nighttime: WCKY strong along with KZNX, conditions determine which one is on top. I can usually aim the radio to get each station clearly. KGBT also surfaces occasionally with SS sports, depending on conditions. I don't note a change in WCKY strength here after they go directional to protect KFBK.

5:10 am CST today, I dialed up 1530 and heard WCKY getting trashed by a strong Spanish language Signal. It didn't match what was on the Cuban networks, so my first "top-of-my-head" guess was KGBT on day power/pattern.

Northeast NJ: Used to be former WJDM out of Elizabeth and temporarily out of the Clifton, NJ towers. As of now its nothing during the day and WCKY out of Cincinnati at night.

Nothing during the day for me in east-central Iowa, but like other high frequency stations, WCKY shows up occasionally during the daytime as do KSTP and WLAC and some x-banders. I think the closest station on 1530 is WLIQ Quincy, IL at about 140 miles away.
Nighttime, all WCKY. Never heard KFBK but year in, year out, always on the lookout for west coast catches.

I imagine you have to put up with KXEL (1540) spilling and slopping onto 1530 AM 24/7

Happy Sunday, @cyberdad.

From Cheyenne, WY:
Daytime... Nothing.
Sometimes before sunset, I'll get 1530 KQSC Colorado Springs, CO kicking with some country music.

At nighttime: 1530 WCKY Cincinnati, much to my surprise (1,085 miles). It's almost as if they forget to go directional at night. There was one time I thought I had KFBK, thanks to mentions of an Oakland basketball team, but it was of course ESPN on WCKY.

Probably Oakland University -- which is in Michigan -- playing a nonconference game against Kentucky (WCKY is on the UK network) rather than an ESPN broadcast.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Usually just splatter from local 1540 KEDA. I used to hear a weak KZNX in Creedmoor, but there's been no trace of it for a couple of years. I wonder if something changed with its power/pattern. At 10 kW and just 68 miles, I ought to be hearing the station. I do get KGBT in Harlingen occasionally when there's daytime skywave.

Sunset: XEUR "Buenísima" in Mexico City comes up through the splatter with a fairly good signal before it goes to day power. Eventually XESD, WCKY, and KGBT start to mix in.

Night: KEDA splatter is reduced. I hear a messy mix of XESD, KGBT, WCKY, and XESD, with the former usually most prominent and the latter heard the least.

Sunrise: The mix is similar to nighttime (plus splatter), but with XEUR stonger and WCKY weaker. Aiming NW, I can hear a weak KQSC in Colorado City for a bit when it increases to critical hours power.

DX/Retro: I've heard daytimer KXTD "Que Buena" in Wagoner, OK, just once - six years ago when it was still on one night. Also, I've heard gospel daytimer KVDW in England, AR, just twice - once at a recent sunset and once the same night I heard KXTD.

Daytime - Nothing

Nighttime - KFBK usually with a good signal

But more recently on the two Hawaii SDRs, WCKY has also been there too and even overtook KFBK for a short time.

Same case in Toledo. Can't speak to where it began, but probably somewhere between there and Findlay. It was noticeable enough that I sometimes listened to Reds games on WTVN instead, which itself is subject to fading in the Toledo area.
With WCKY on 1530, there can be cancellation by the time you hit WLW's tower in Mason.

I lived in one of the South Dayton suburbs and yes, cancellation city on WSAI (at the time on 1530).

Moses Lake, WA

KFBK is dominant at night. During the day, there's nothing except for KFBK around sunrise/sunset and during short winter days.

I did faintly receive WCKY here back in October:

Edit: Explementary AM propagation tonight combined with my loop antenna now being outdoors have allowed for WCKY to come in very clear tonight under KFBK. Heard a clear "ESPN 1530" branding under KFBK.
