AM Frequency of the Week - 1540 kHz

What can you all get on 1540 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is a somewhat fuzzy WWGK/Cleveland which rebroadcasts WKNR 850 as ESPN Cleveland II during the day. At night, it's mostly a mix of CHIN/Toronto and KXEL/Waterloo, IA with some other UNids under them.

In northern VA, I get WACA Wheaton, MD on days. Wheaton is located just north of DC, and WACA plays Spanish-tropical music. Nights it a mix of stations with KXEL on top. KXEL is one of 7 AM stations I logged in that's west of the MS River and with the call letters starting with the K, here in VA.

1540 days is KXPA Bellevue, WA. I used to live two miles away from their transmitter, so it was a "no-DX zone".

Nights I get KXPA, and sometimes KXEL Waterloo. KMPC from LA has popped up once or twice, but it is not common.

It's ZNS-1 Nassau, or maybe the occasional Cuban on 1540.

When ZNS 1 had copper thieves over a year ago, and was off the air a month or so, I tried to catch other stations. I heard two US stations who weren't supposed to be on at night. They shall be nameless.

I heard the former WPTR Albany back in the 70s and also the former KBUY Ft. Worth (around sunset it had to be) from here in south FL, and possible CHIN about 18-20 years ago with Broadcast News news report. (Who else would run BN?) Never heard KXEL.

ZNS1 doesn't really have a great signal, but doggone if I can catch anything else.

I've tried for ZNS-1 a few times myself but it can't seem to make the hop over Florida. Or I'm just not listening at the right time.

1540 is a mystery frequency for me. I've never heard anything during the day, even though there's a 900+ watter from the New Orleans area that should be a good target. And at night I've never gotten a clear copy on anything that I can remember. It's usually hammered by the 1530 from Cincy and 1550 WLOR from Huntsville.

I wonder how much power ZNS1 is running right now....can't be 50k, even directional, if you ask me. I am less'n 200 miles from it, and it isn't worth bothering to listen. I know they have a talk show late nights.

Can you hear it during the day at less than 200 miles?

^ Not really.....we have WRHC 1550. It might be better from the Palm Beaches....it's tough from the FL Keys too in the day.

@ Zach :
ZNS was tough to dig out, audiowise, the times I got them at my Folks house in The Villages, but atop the channel. Did this station ever have its audio or processing wound up?
Back on Long Island, in the 60's, they'd be there. But they've always sounded to me like they're mumbling.

* * * * * * *

Logged here in NEPA are WNWR Philly, KXEL and WPTR -- all from 1994. If I remember, the next Aurora, I'll give 1540 a listen for ZNS and see if the mumbling breaks through the clutter.

Around Columbus, Ohio, nothing during the days except maybe some WDLR slop (that's at 1550 from Delaware, Ohio, 30 miles north). At night, usually KXEL.

KXEL to the west, and CHIN to the east are the dominant ones here. Working the channel for DX, I've also logged the following in recent years:

KBOA Kennett, MO when KXEL was off one time
KLKC Parsons, KS also when KXEL was off
WBRY Woodbury, TN during an auroral opening
WLOI La Porte, IN under CHIN
WSMI Litchfield, IL heard once at sign-off
WYNC Yanceyville, NC
WKVQ Eatonton, GA during their DX test in 2011
KGBC Galveston, TX completely alone on the channel once during heavy auroral conditions

From eastern Iowa, it's KXEL night and day. From 50 miles away, it's as good as a local.

From NYC, in some parts of the city I can hear WNWR, a 50k day timer from Philly. At night around the New York City area, I've heard CHIN from Toronto numerous times. Never did I hear WDCD from Albany, 50k signal, before it went dark about a year ago. Its signal was highly directional; and word had it that the equipment was significantly degraded and the signal had become a mere shadow of its former self. Sad end to a troubled, many say wasted, 50k signal.

1540 days is the local 250w daytimer KNGL with a signal a lot of people would kill for. (Compare it's coverage with some of the other 1540s in the east to see what hot soil conductivity atop the salt dome can do.) They have at 2 watt night authorization but for a number of reasons aren't able to use it

Nights is a fairly inconsistent KXEL, about 80 miles or so south of what I have seen is their night protected contour.

SW Ohio
1540 KHZ

Not a good frequency for me as I live just a few miles from the 50,000 powerhouse, 1530/WCKY.

However, when conditions permit, I am able to hear CHIN/Toronto, usually at sunrise.

There is also the occasionally heard, KXEL/Waterloo.

I've also logged WTBI, Pickens SC at sunset (2009)

From NE NC car radio. Days 1540 is a weak WREJ Richmond, VA. Sunrise/sunset WNWR Bala Cynwyd, PA and KXEL Waterloo, IA.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago...

Days....If anything a very weak WTKM (Hartford, WI), but KXEL somestimes makes it via daytime skywave during winter.

Nights....KXEL has one of the better skywave signals around here. But I've heard CHIN once or twice underneath. Back in the day WPTR would sometimes sneak in, but this was very rare. I've never heard ZNS at my home location.
